    • A  social network service  focuses on building  online communities  of people who share interests and activities, or who are interested in exploring the interests and activities of others. Most social network services are  web based  and provide a variety of ways for users to interact, such as  e-mail  and  Instant messaging  services.

  • 4. Facebook – Introduction
    • Originally launched in 2004 for University students in the US to keep in contact
    • Now the largest social networking site with over 120 million users (October 2008)
    • Users can join networks organised by city, workplace, school and region to connect and interact with other people
    • People can add friends, send messages and update their personal profile to notify friends about them themselves.
  • 5. Fan Pages
    • Facebook pages offer you a way to accurately represent on facebook what’s important in real life.
    • Pages can be created to represent a public figure, artist, and or organisation and may only be created by an official representative of that entity

    • The facebook fan page is almost like a jigsaw;
    • you piece smaller elements together to construct a greater image
    • Posted Items
    • Allows you to post web links, images and video clips from other sources

    • Notes
    • Notes are an easy to way issue press releases and news to the “fans” of the page.

    • Events
    • Allows you to invite “fans” to events such as gigs, fashion shows, opening nights

  • 10. What is “Linkedin”?
    • Linkedin is the world’s largest professional network site.
    • Over 30 million members
    • The site helps you exchange knowledge, ideas and opportunities with your trusted contacts
    • The Birmingham Post is just one of many companies that have their own group. Joining will help expand your West-Midlands contacts and also gives you access to forums where business issues are discussed

    • Status
    • Your status allows you to update people in your network with what your currently working on
    • Photo
    • Sort of self-explanitory – a photo of you so people in your network can identify you
    • Summary
    • A brief summary of your professional activities i.e. campaigns you have worked on, achievements.

    • A list of your professional experience with recommendations from previous employers – similar to an online CV
    • Education
    • Your educational background

    • Interested in (no not as in dating)
    • What you’re interested in gaining through Linkedin
    • Additional information
    • Anything else that hasn't already been included; hobbies, interests, groups etc
  • 14. NETWORKS – Not What You Know But Who You Know
    • The idea of a network is to enable you to tap into the knowledge, experience and contacts within it.
  • 15. Searching – People, Industry & Groups
    • Search by name and other characteristics to quickly locate the person you are looking for
    • Use advanced search to target specific skill sets or find subject-matter experts
    • Conduct reference searches on potential job candidates and business partners

    • Linkedin Groups allow organisations to extend their brand’s reach and strengthen the brand with existing users
    • Group Directory
    • Allows you to easily find the right group by searching through categories.
    • Once you have a group you would like to join, click “Join Group” to send a request to the administrator.

    • A great way to keep in touch with organisations you are part of.
    • You can discuss issues that are of interest to the entire group and get their opinions on the matter

    • Twitter is a networking service which allows users to send and receive short text updates
    • Updates can be up to 140 characters long

    • What my members are telling me is that with the recession there are stingent limits on travel these days in most major organisations . That being the case one of the few relatively cost effective ways that they can keep in touch with each other and get a feel of what's going on is through social networking sites and remote telepresence type meetings. I can only see this trend developing into the future
