So... Spring Cleaning takes a certain philosophy eh? True. There are parallels to what the library does when they weed its collections, deciding what to retain and what to discard for good.

Spring Cleaning - Presentation Transcript

  1. Spring Cleaning
  2. Why
    • Need more space.
    • Don’t have, can’t afford, more space.
    • Clutter drains energy.
    • Wasting time, can’t find stuff.
    • Safety hazard.
    • Health hazard.
    • Others have better use for your idle stuff.
  3. Approach USEFUL DON’T WANT USELESS STILL WANT Throw It Away Pack it into boxes/bags. Throw it away at proper places. Give It Away Pack it into boxes/bags. Find potential beneficiaries. Consider selling it. Last resort - throw it away. Archive It Pack it into boxes/bags. Store it away. Review later if still wanted. Retain It Find a place for it. Consider archiving it.
  4. Principles
    • Choose an area to start.
    • Proceed systematically.
    • Rest but do not stop until task is done.
    • Rid stuff beyond its shelf-life.
    • Be discriminating and ruthless ridding your stuff.
    • We don’t need that many momentos.
  5. Ingredients
    • Uninterrupted block of time.
    • Bucket, water, cloth, broom, dust-pan, vacuum cleaner.
    • Garbage/plastic bags, boxes, containers.
    • Scissors, blade, scotch-tape, string.
    • Music, company, etc.
  6. Remember
    • We come with nothing. We will leave with nothing. Are our stuffs that important?
    • Stuff don’t make us happy. Much less the pursuit thereof. Relationships matter more.
    • Strive for contentment. More is not necessarily good. Avoid consumerism. You’ll also save money.
    • Stuff has a post-acquisition cost. Time, money and energy to maintain it, archive it and eventually throwing it away. Are these all worth it?
    • Simplify your life.
    • Think before acquiring. Acquire only keepers, not doodads. When in doubt, don’t acquire.
    • Put things back where they should be.
    • Spring-clean regularly.
