    • Foreign Intervention Why do you think India intervened in the Sri Your problems Lankan conflict? are my problems too! Sri Lanka India 10
    • Foreign Intervention• At first, India tried to mediate between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government • E.g. July 1983 Riots (Black July)-- India sent its foreign minister to Sri Lanka to mediate through a dialogue session • FAILED as both sides could not come to an agreement Sinhalese rioters set fire to Tamil homes and businesses 11
    • Foreign Intervention• Later, India intervened more directly • E.g. 1: June 1987 • India sent 20 ships to Jaffna to provide food and fuel to Sri Lankan Tamils--> Indian ships turned away by the Sri Lankan Navy • Indian Air Force dropped food and medical parcels and fuel to Tamils in Jaffna --> violated Sri A military plane dropping small Lankan airspace packages of food supplies. 12
    • Foreign Intervention• Later, India intervened more directly • E.g. 2: July 1987 • India pressurized Sri Lanka to sign a Peace Accord and agree to a ceasefire • The Sri Lankan troops were to be withdrawn to their barracks in the north and the Tamil rebels were to surrender their arms The signing of the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord between the Indian Prime Minister and Sri Lankan President. • FAILED 13
    • Foreign Intervention • India clashed with LTTE due to failure of LTTE to surrender all their arms • Fighting between LTTE and Indian troops • Indian peacekeeping force withdrawn in March 1990In my opinion, India’s intervention made things ___________ because ____________________________________________________________________________________________ 14
    • Economic Consequences Unemployment Loss of Foreign • Many Tamil businesses Investment and factories burned down • Foreign investors• Thousands of factory workers, deterred by Sri Lanka’s the self-employed and political instability plantation workers lost their jobs Decline in Tourism • Fewer people visited Sri Lanka especially after Black July • This worsened the unemployment in the country 15
    • SocialConsequences• Large-scale displacement • The civil war caused many people (especially Tamils) to flee to India e.g. Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu • More than 65,000 refugees in India • Today, many people, mostly Tamils, are still living in overcrowded refugee camps in both India and Sri Lanka 16
