    2. PATHS
      • What is PATHS?
      • How has it been working in the nursery?
      • How does it fit within the West Lothian Development plan?

    3. PATHS – what is it? It is a structured, developmental, emotional literacy curriculum, based on the following assumptions:
      • A child’s behaviour depends on their ability to understand and discuss emotions.
      • This ability to understand and discuss emotions is dependent on their developmental stage as well as environmental factors
      • A child’s understanding of their own and others emotions influences effective problem solving.
      • The nursery/ school environment is vital in supporting social and emotional development and can help to bring change in these skills.
    4. PATHS sets out to:
      • Increase self control
      • Enhance self-esteem and self confidence
      • Improve ‘affective’ communication
      • Improve ability to understand difference between feelings and behaviours, self and others.
      • Develop appropriate attributions, and responsibility
      • Improve understanding of how one’s behaviour affects others
      • Enhance motivation and use of creativity
      • Improve logical reasoning
      • Improve problem solving skills
      • Involve parents
    5. General Issues
      • PATHS works best when all staff are involved
      • The nursery staff are the most important element of the approach
      • It works best when presented 1-2 times per week
      • It is important to establish the PATHS rules early

      • Feelings and Relationships Unit - 56 lessons encompassed within 3 curriculum manuals
      • Problem Solving Unit - in 2 curriculum manuals
      • and now: The Preschool Unit in 2 curriculum manuals
