PATHS – what is it? It is a structured, developmental, emotional literacy curriculum, based on the following assumptions: A child’s behaviour depends on their ability to understand and discuss emotions. This ability to understand and discuss emotions is dependent on their developmental stage as well as environmental factors A child’s understanding of their own and others emotions influences effective problem solving. The nursery/ school environment is vital in supporting social and emotional development and can help to bring change in these skills.

PATHS sets out to: Increase self control Enhance self-esteem and self confidence Improve ‘affective’ communication Improve ability to understand difference between feelings and behaviours, self and others. Develop appropriate attributions, and responsibility Improve understanding of how one’s behaviour affects others Enhance motivation and use of creativity Improve logical reasoning Improve problem solving skills Involve parents
