Psychologists are making some very interesting discoveries about the brain and especially in line with the concept of ‘altruism’ – the idea of doing something for someone else –solely with their Needs in mind. . .rather than your own. Any ‘runners’ in the room? Do you identify with the DREAD of getting ready to go out for a run or a longer exercise of any kind, But, what happens when the exercise or run is over? How do you feel? So in summary, NetWeaving requires that you get to know people better so you’ll truly be in a position to help them locate their missing pieces. In other words, you have to be willing to probe and to then allow the other person to open up to you. So as opposed to the networker’s mindset , and the superficial conversations which typically take place in a networking environment . . . .
While people are in a “networking” mindset mode, they tend to listen with only ONE pair of ears and to be tuned in with only ONE set of antennae - "Can you help ME?". . ."Are you a prospect for what I have to offer?“ Once again, there’s nothing wrong with this. We all need more business, and it’s only human nature that we will tend to look out for our self-interests FIRST.
. . . a NetWeaver’s mindset is focused on helping others locate his or her missing pieces and the only way that can happen is to dig deeper than typically occurs within a networking environment. You just need to have more meaningful conversations in order to understand some of the key questions in order to be of real help to someone. For example, in a business context, you need to know: - How do they make their money? - What do their BEST prospects look like? - What are their major needs, problems, and opportunities? - How can you be of help?
So here are the strategies of NetWeaving and the two skill sets for becoming a NetWeaver. First it’s about putting OTHER people together in win-win relationships , connecting them with the people who they need . . . to help locate the missing pieces to THEIR puzzle ( sometimes when they don’t even recognize that a Need, Problem, or Opportunity exists ).
Or secondly , being a strategic resource for others , one person has a need for Information and/or Resources of some kind , and the NetWeaver either acts as a gratuitous resource provider him or herself , OR . . .
And remember, you don’t always need to be the Resource Provider yourself . The best NetWeavers become ‘virtual Sgt. Bilko’s’. Some of you may not be old enough to remember the TV show with Phil Silvers as Sgt. Bilko. I actually messed up in the book because someone told me as I was writing it that a more modern day example was Corporal Klinger in MASH . Well they meant Radar , so I mixed up a NetWeaver with a cross-dresser. In either case , Sgt. Bilko or Radar , whether you were a General or a Private, you came to him because he had positioned himself as a strategic “resource ”. So, you don’t always need to be the resource provider yourself. You just need to assemble a network of experts and specialists in a wide variety of fields . In exchange for YOU agreeing to be part of their gratuitous network, THEY agree to part of yours.

It was then it struck me that this concept really could change the world and make it better and with the pilot project at the Buckhead Business Association already underway , and involving about 150 people, we HAVE actually put this concept into action !
For one of the work assignments for the BBA Pilot Project , I had assigned each participant to act as a “host” for putting two other persons together . .. Similar to what Mark Schooler spends 60% of his time doing – for a breakfast, for a lunch, or for a beer or glass of wine after work. And in addition to facilitating the meeting , the NetWeaver would explain a little more about NetWeaving. It was from the movie that I got the idea to combine the “matchmaking” element of NetWeaving with a modified version of ‘pay it forward’. During closing comments at the meeting which the NetWeaver has arranged and hosted , why not ask each of the two persons to ‘pay it forward’ and to act as a host to two other persons . Although the exponential growth wouldn’t be as great as in Trevor’s ‘pay it forward’ concept, the practical reality of these two persons actually following through and doing this. . . I believe is much more realistic than the chances of the 3 gratuitous acts of kindness being carried forward which is just a little too fuzzy. I think Pay It Forward is a great grade concept to teach children but I think the NetWeaving version will work much better for business. What do YOU think? (Thumbs up?)
