EUGENE, Ore. (KMTR) -- Helping kids and their families shed pounds in
Bethel, a joint effort on Saturday from University of Oregon students and
the United Way.
More than 20 kids and parents took part in the "Tip the Scale" fitness fair
at Petersen Barn in north Eugene on Saturday, February 25th, 2012.
University of Oregon students, athletes and instructors lead the program,
teaching kids about easy, no cost fun ways to exercise.
According to the "Tip the Scale" campaign, Bethel School District has one
of the highest rates of childhood obesity and hunger in all of Oregon.
Today's workshop leaders say working out can be quick, easy and
happen any time of day.
“It can be totally fun, it can be totally enjoyable, and that's the whole
purpose of what we're doing today and here is to make these kids want to
work out, to want to have fun, to want to increase their energy level, to
want to be active,” says Chera McCabe, a Physical Education and Recreation Instructor at the University of Oregon.
“We’re pushing themselves to be something better that they could be everyday,” says McCabe.
The “Tip the Scale” campaign was created by five University of Oregon public relations students as part of a national competition.
