Slide 1: Dundee University Hack Day, Mark II Christian Heilmann Dundee, Scotland, November 2007

Slide 2: Welcome Hackers.

Slide 3: Hackers?

Slide 6: but in reality…

Slide 7: www.atariarchives.org/deli/hacker_ethics.php

Slide 8: Karl Koch a.k.a. Hagbard Celine

Slide 9: The “real” hackers had a dream.

Slide 10: “Wissen muss für jeden Menschen gleich zugänglich sein!“

Slide 11: “Information is free and needs to be accessible for everyone.“

Slide 12: The good news is that we are well on the way.

Slide 13: The other good news is that we don’t need to resort to illegal activity.

Slide 14: More and more companies realize that offering information for the world to re- mix is a great idea.

Slide 15: This starts with RSS feeds to subscribe to without having to visit web sites.

Slide 16: …and it ends with full fledged Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).

Slide 17: APIs allow access to systems and retrieve information in the desired format.

Slide 18: http://www.programmableweb.com

Slide 19: What we do with this information is up to us.

Slide 20: Hacking with it is one idea.

Slide 21: Hacking in this case:  You make a system do what it doesn’t do out of the box.  You built upon structures that are already in place.

Slide 23: You can achieve that in different ways.

Slide 24: By mixing one system with another (a Mashup).

Slide 25: By accessing or displaying information in a different fashion.

Slide 26:  Interesting Platforms: – Maps – Messenger – Air / Flex – Facebook – Twitter – Flickr – Upcoming

Slide 27: Above all hacking should be about having fun and achieving something you always wanted to try.

Slide 28: This is what Hack Day is inside Yahoo!

Slide 29: We want our developers to challenge our products and make them better for users.

Slide 30: We also want our developers to challenge themselves to try something new.

Slide 31: And we want to challenge the business people to see what is possible when you let developers play.

Slide 32: … and now we offer the same possibility to you.

Slide 33: Feel the developer’s itch.

Slide 34: Use APIs, systems, SDKs and ideas and do something that helps you and isn’t available yet.

Slide 35: Past hacks that rocked:  Search everything (photos, videos, web) from inside your messenger.  Get images related to the lyrics of a song while you play it.  Tag files on your harddrive to find them later on.  Share and collaboratively annotate pictures with others using desktop widgets.  Allow people to doodle on maps and send a replay to their friends  Offer live information on traffic problems using instant messaging and mobile alerts.
