  • 1. OFLATIN AMERICANATURAL VEGETATION
  • 2. WHAT IS NATURALVEGETATION
  • 3. TYPES OF NATURALVEGETATION Equatorial Forests Temperate Forests Mediterranean Vegetation Savanna Grasslands Pampas Desert Vegetation .
  • 4. EQUATORIAL FOREST CHARACTERISTICS : The hightemperature and heavy rainfall produceluxuriant vegetation generally composed ofbroad-leaved trees ,found in wet tropicaluplands and lowlands around the Equator. WHERE IT IS FOUND: Found in theAmazon Basin and coastal lowlands of North-eastern Brazil, coastal Colombia and parts ofadjoining Ecuador. CHIEF SPECIES: Rubber , mahogany ,ebony , cieba and brazil nuts.
  • 5. DID YOUKNOW ?WHAT IT LOOKSLIKEEquatorialforests are alsocalled ‘ Selvas ’ .These forests arefound near theEquator between0° to 10° north andsouth .Amazon basin
  • 6. TEMPERATE FORESTS CHARACTERISTICS : Vegetationtype with a more or less continuouscanopy with wide leaves, big and tall trees, non seasonal vegetation . WHERE IT IS FOUND : Warmtemperate forests are found in BrazilianHighlands , Paraguay, Uruguay ,SouthernBrazil and cool temperate forest arefound in upper slopes of Andes and S.W.Chile . CHIEF SPECIES : Beech , conifers,Parana Pines , Quebracho – source oftanic acid , Yerba mate .
  • 7. DID YOUKNOW ?WHAT ITLOOKS LIKEThe temperate forestbiome is found in regionswhere winters are coldand summers are warm.Regions with this climateare common in the mid-latitudes, far from boththe equator and thepoles.Temperate forests arealmost always made oftwo types of trees, deciduous and evergreen.
  • 8. MEDITERRANEANFORESTS CHARACTERISTICS : Mediterraneanforests are characterized by dry summers andrainy winters , generally composed ofbroadleaf trees . WHERE IT IS FOUND : Middle Chile CHIEF SPECIES : Evergreen laurels andacacias are found in wetter areas whereasthorny shrubs and cacti are found in driernorth.
  • 9. DID YOUKNOW ?WHAT ITLOOKS LIKEMediterranean forest ofcentral ChileMediterranean eco-regionsare semi-arid, and often havepoor soils, so they arevulnerable to degradation byhuman activities such aslogging, overgrazing, conversion to agriculture, urbanization, and introductionof exotic and invasive species .Fire, both natural and human-caused, has played a large rolein shaping the ecology ofMediterranean eco regions .
  • 10. SAVANNA GRASSLANDS CHARACTERISTICS : Widely spaced, scattered trees ,tall grass , characterized bythe trees being sufficiently small or widelyspaced so that the canopy does not close. WHERE IT IS FOUND : Found inOrinoco basin ,Paraguay , northernArgentina and Brazil . CHIEF SPECIES : Acacias ,tall coarsegrass and patches of scrub are found in drierareas whereas shorter grass in wetter areas .
  • 11. DID YOUKNOW ?Savanna in Cerrado ,BrazilWHAT ITLOOKS LIKEThey are found in thelower latitudes. Thisparticular biome falls inbetween a grasslandand a forest region.There are actually twovery different seasons ina savanna; a very longdry season (winter), anda very wet season(summer).
  • 12. PAMPAS CHARACTERISTICS: Large treelessplains of South America with largegrasslands areas. Also known as temperategrasslands . WHERE IT IS FOUND : Argentinaprovinces of Buenos Aires, La Pampa, SantaFe and Córdoba, most of Uruguay and thesouthern most Brazilian State . CHIEF SPECIES : Small plants such asgrasses flourish, and trees are rare.
  • 13. DID YOUKNOW ?WHAT ITLOOKS LIKEThe Pampas are fertileSouth Americanlowlands which supportsa thriving pastoral andfarming economy .Frequent wild firesensure that only smallplants such as grassesflourish, and trees arerare .
  • 14. DESERT VEGETATION CHARACTERISTICS : Desert habitatarea have adapted to its dry, hot extremes byusing both physical and behavioralmechanisms . They often have few or noleaves WHERE IT IS FOUND : Found in aridareas of Atacama desert , Sertao arid regionof N.E. Brazil and N.W. Mexico ( Sonora andBaja deserts ) CHIEF SPECIES : Lichens , acacia ,scrub and Cacti are vegetational covers .
  • 15. DID YOUKNOW ?WHAT ITLOOKS LIKESouth America has twomajor deserts with verylittle precipitation. The largest desert is thePatagonian in SouthernArgentina. The second one isAtacama Desert which is along, narrow coastaldesert in Chile.
