Background
In 2008, USC faculty Dr. James Owens started WIJABA, the World Is Just A Book Away non-profit organization.
WIJABA’s mission is to provide children access to books, in impoverished areas around the globe.
The AUSCI committee joined in the cause, since there is a REAL need for libraries in Indonesia (we received reports that some children were learning to read, by finding instruction manuals of VCD player found in garbage dumps).

The 2009 USC Charity Ball
Our inaugural Ball was held on 1 April 2009 at the Grand Hyatt Jakarta

500 attendees (50% of which were non-alumni)
Netted 350 jt
100% of which was donated to WIJABA, to help build libraries in Sidoarjo, West Java

2009 USC Charity Ball’s Results
Working with WIJABA, we helped build:
21 libraries in various primary schools (SD) in Sidoarjo
2 units of Mobile Libraries circling the villages around Sidoarjo
IMPACT = approximately 10,000 school children in 50 schools now have access to 12,000 books within their perimeter.
