Cord Blood Banking   Cryo-Cell Cord Blood Bank is registered Cord Blood Storage with the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and the Food and Drug Cord Blood Services Administration (FDA). In addition to this, it is the only blood bank with ISO Cryo-Cell Cord Blood 9001:2000 certification. Cord Blood Stem Cell Cryo-Cell Cord Blood Bank provides the U-Cord ® service which carries a processing and testing fee of $1595.00 and an annual storage fee of $125.00. Cord Blood Transplants   Cord Blood Registry The processing and testing fee encompasses the cost of registration, the collection and outbound kits, shipping, cord blood processing and infectious disease screening on the mother’s blood. There are also other payment plans offered to returning customers etc. Cord Blood Donation   The bank also offers financial support programs that can pay a client up to $10,000.00 to What Is Cord Blood cover the cost of transplant therapies. It also provides a financial guarantee that will pay a » client $50,000.00 if a client’s blood fails to engraft when it should. Cryo-cell uses the bag collection method which draws blood from the severed umbilical cord into a blood- bag. Blood is also collected from the mother for screening purposes.   When the cord blood is taken to the laboratory it is processed using hydroxyl ethyl starch which isolates the white blood cell percentage containing the stem cells.   The cryoprotectant, DMSO, and Dextran are then added and all of the contents stored in a compartmentalized cryobag. The cryobag contains three segments that are used for testing and a 20ml and 5ml sample. The bag is over-wrapped and subjected to controlled-rate freezing to make it suitable for long-term storage. In controlled-rate freezing the bag is placed in a protective casing and placed in Dewar flasks containing liquid nitrogen.   This type of storage should keep the blood feasible for use for decades. The blood taken from the mother is tested at a laboratory that is approved by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and registered with the Food and Drug Association. At this lab the mother’s blood is tested for HIV, CMV, HTLV, hepatitis and syphilis as well as for the absence of microorganisms. This testing is done to determine if the child’s blood could possibly be used by relatives.   The samples stored in the bank belong to the parents of the child until said child reaches the legal age. During this interim, only the parents can decide if the blood should be given to other relatives or siblings. There is no cost to retrieve the stem cells and when they are needed, Cryo-Cell Cord Blood Bank will send them in a specialized container that is able to maintain cryogenic temperatures. Since start-up to February of 2010, all blood grafts coming from Cryo-Cell Blood Bank have been viable upon thawing and have been used to treat diseases like cerebral palsy, sickle cell anaemia, neuroblastoma, Hodgkin’s lymphoma and acute myeloid leukaemia.
