  • About a month ago in new york The buzzword we’ve been hearing lately is BIG DATA
  • big data is this phrase i ’ ve been hearing for the last year or so and it ’ s all about the tremendous volumes of information we deal with. Imagine an excel speadsheet with 1 million rows. Imagine one with 10 million rows. That is the kind of scale we ’ re dealing with here and it ’ s just getting bigger.
  • Let’s say you have a phone with 5GB of storage, it’s about 200 million phones. It’s all about scale and it’s getting bigger and bigger.
  • One of my favorite keynotes was from Jer Thorp who is the Data Artist in Residence at the NY Times. He talked about the process he went through to design the algorithm to arrange the names for the 9/11 Memorial and how collaboration and failure are both important to what he does.
  • Alistair Dant, Interactive Lead from the Guardian described how his small team functions to create different levels of visualizations. Stories requiring a quick turnaround - 3hrs, using pre-built templates - 3days or something more interactive with new ideas and techniques can take 3 weeks Opportunities lies at the intersection between technology, data and design narrative New of the world phone hacking scandal hearing with rupert murdoch
  • Alex Lundry conservative pollster, session called Chart Wars showed how politicians are using charts against each other.
  • T ’ s just amazing that such different views came from the same dataset showing how shape, eye flow, visual noise, iconography, emotion, units of measure, typography - all these elements can be used to manipulate messages We live in this great world now where people not only flight with words and songs or protest, but also charts.
  • Even the white house has gotten in on this with their use of data visualization and infographics in blogs and other communications. Enhanced videos streamed live during a presentation to congress. We are going to see more of this We live in this great world now where people not only flight with words and songs or protest, but also charts.
  • As visual thinkers I'm sure you've noticed this huge explosion of infographics over the past year. But I am predicting that eventually there will be a backlash against them. Visual literacy is more important than ever
  • But in the end, it ’ s the visualization of the data. It ’ s telling to story that is buried in that data.
  • DataViz will continue to grow as we continue to tell important stories.
  • But what's really exciting is data scientists are going to need us visual thinkers. It's a big job to extract and analyze huge amounts of data and who is best equipped to figure out what story the data is telling, and how should that story be told to end users?
  • We're like CSI Grissom putting the pieces together to discover the truth about the events that generated the data in the first place.

  • “ Every two days now we create as much information as we did from the dawn of civilization up until  2003… That’s something like five exabytes of data” Eric Schmidt – Former CEO Google http://techcrunch.com/2010/08/04/schmidt-data/ How big is Big Data?
