  • 11. I want to talk to you about mapping interactive experiences.Let’s call it “wireframing.”Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 12. A wireframe is a visual guide that represents the skeletalframework of an interaction. It does not specify how anexperience looks, just how it works.Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 13. Wireframes rock because:• you don’t have to be Michelangelo it involves drawing a lot of lines and boxes— so while creativity is important, artistic aptitude is not totally necessary• you can work quickly it is all about getting an idea on paper and not at all about color, typography, or other elements that slow the process• you must make tough decisions figure out the hard stuff (functionality) up front, figure out the details (making it pretty) later• you can slice, dice, and hack up your work (without being mortified at killing something you spent hours designing perfectly)a game-changingwireframe by @jack ------->Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 14. Interactive design may be a new discipline, but designers have been“wireframing” information and experiences for decades:Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 15. by creating instruction manuals...which may include instructions for: safety, assembly, installation, setup, normal usage, programming, maintenance, and/or troubleshootingChanning Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 16. customer journey maps...which may include customer actions, goals/needs at each step, moments of truth—areas ofparticular importance in the overall customer experience, pain points—gaps and disconnects inservice, brand impact, and/or business touchpointsChanning Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 17. and style guides.which may include logo, clearspace, minimum size, color, use of photography and other imagery, typography, and applications such as letterhead, business cards, mailing envelopes, etc.Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 18. Across the different disciplines of industrial, interior, graphic, orinteractive design—designers have a need to dictate how theircreations should be used or experienced.Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 19. Times are changing. The line between disciplines has begun to blur.Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 20. Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 21. Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 22. Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 23. As the line between different disciplines begins to blur, these instructionalguides must become more dimensional. It’s no longer just about the product, environment, or brand—but isnow also about the additional layer of interaction and social contentprovoked by it.Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 24. Your task is to wireframe an interaction, decision, or experience that hastaken place or could take place in your day-to-day life. This should be a “hybrid wireframe,” incorporating more traditionalinformation mapping with interactive and social cues.Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 25. It’s important to think about the narrative surrounding your experience. You are being challenged to tell a story that your audience can careabout and become engaged in, while making conscious decisionsabout your “voice.”Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011

  • 36. Choose a moment of interest from your daily life—a conversation, decision, or observation.Draw or map this experience, including a layer of socialmedia or other interactive content that was involved.(C’mon, we know you aren’t going to see a movie withoutchecking Rotten Tomatoes and show times online first...)Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
  • 37. Include all the details—the little things are what make it interesting.Tell us a story we can care about. Then, we make it pretty.Channing Ritter & National University of Singapore, Division of Industrial Design October 2011
