What does it mean to be a Green School?

This is making our school green because the heater or air conditioner will shutdown instead of staying on while no one is using it; it is conserving our electricity.
The cleaning supplies are not highly toxic. When they are highly toxic, it can trigger asthma and other illnesses.

These pictures show the bike racks and crosswalk in front of the school. Our school was built at this location so kids could ride their bikes and walk to school. Bike racks and crosswalk

The white roof at our school The reason we have a white roof is because it is usually hot in Texas. The white roof reflects the light. If we had a black roof, it would absorb more heat. This would make the air conditioner use more energy.

Lights automatically turn off in every room in the building. The sensors look for movement and when there isn’t any, they turn off. Green light means there is movement. The picture below shows a sensor next to a light that is on.

There are lots of windows at Chandler Oaks Elementary. We have them to allow natural light to come in so less electricity is used to power lights.

Our school has many green features and one of them is the rain water sprinkling system. This system collects rain water and then uses it to water plant life. To make sure the water collected is not wasted, there are sensors determining whether or not the trees and fields need to be watered. What a great way to conserve our resources!

Off-Gas: The gas that is produced by new materials.

All these items were chosen because they do not give of “off-gas” and this makes our air cleaner. They also do not give off a “bad smell” to the school or area.
The water storage ponds are a great area for the schools rain to drain down into the pipes and go into the underground river and wells. The rain drains through the dirt into pipes to be reused. We can use rain water for watering the lawn. Our water is precious because we get so little rain. By: Jack and Xander from Chandler Oaks. GO CHEETAS!

Chandler Oaks Elementary does their part when it comes to recycling. They recycle many different materials in order to reduce the amount of trash thrown away. In every classroom recycling bins are used along with a big bin outside near the parking lot.
