  • 2. Much like the Linux or Windows operating system controls your desktop or laptop computer, a mobile operating system is the software platform on top of which other programs can run on mobile devices. Which is responsible for determining the functions and features available on your device, such as thumbwheel, keyboards, WAP, synchronization with applications, email, text messaging and more 2
  • 3. An operating system (OS) is an interface between hardware and user, It manages the hardware and software resources of the system. The operating system that controls mobile device is called Mobile OS. They are simple and deal with the wireless versions of broadband and local connectivity, mobile multimedia formats and different input methods etc. A layer structure showing where operating system is located 3
  • 4. There are many mobile operating systems. The followings demonstrate the most important ones: Java ME Platform Symbian OS Linux OS Windows Mobile OS iPhone OS Plam OS Google Android Platform 4
  • 5. • J2ME platform is a set of technologies, specifications and libraries developed for small devices like mobile phones, pagers, and personal organizers. • Java ME was designed by Sun Microsystems. It is licensed under GNU General Public License. 5
  • 6. • Symbian OS is 32 bit. • It is a multitasking operating system and very less dependence on peripherals. • Access to these services and resources is coordinated through a client-server framework. • User libraries include networking, communication, I/O interfaces and etc. 6
  • 7. • It is known as Embedded Linux which is used in embedded computer systems such as mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants, media players and other consumer devices. • In spite of Linux operating system designed for Servers and desktops, the Embedded Linux is designed for devices which have relatively limited resources such as small size of RAM, storage, screen, limited power and etc. 7
  • 8.  Windows Mobile is a compact operating system .  designed for mobile devices and based on Microsoft Win32.  It is run on Pocket PCs, Smartphone’s and Portable media centers.  It provides ultimate interoperability. Users with various requirements are able to manipulate their data. 8
  • 9.  iPhone OS is a mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc.  It is the default OS of iPhone, iPod Touch and the upcoming iPad.  The user interface of iPhone OS is based on multi-touch gestures. Some of the Features of iPhone OS  Multi-touch User interface  POP/IMAP/SMTP e-mail  Background Processing Software development  Language: Objective C  IDE: XCode  OS: Mac OS X Leopard or later 9
  • 10. 10 •Palm OS is a proprietary mobile operating system, designed in 1996 by Palm Computing, Inc. •Palm OS is designed for ease of use with a touch screen- based graphical user interface. Some of the Key Features of Palm OS • Simple, Multi-tasking environment • Handwriting recognition input system • TCP/IP network access Software development • Language: C/C++ • IDEs: CodeWarrior Development Studio, PRC-tools based gcc.

  • 12.  Android is an operating system and software platform for mobile devices that uses a modified version of the Linux.  It was initially developed by Android Inc.- a firm later purchased by Google.  Android has seen a number of updates since its original release: 1.0(Relese 1), 1.5(CupCake), 1.6(Donut), 2.0(Eclair) and 2.1(Flan), 2.2 (Froyo), 2.3 (Gingerbread),3.0 (Honeycomb),4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), 4.1(Jelly Bean), and KitKat (4.4). 12
  • 13. Some of the Features of Android OS  Android is open and Free  Uses proven technologies like Java, XML and Linux  Voice Typing For All Text Fields.  Multi Tasking. Software development  Language: Java  Android has two debuggers ADB (Android Debug Bridge) and DDMS (Dalvik Debug Monitor Server) 13
  • 14. Android from Google Inc. has the largest sales in most markets worldwide., 78.4%, iOS holds the second place , 8.16%, Windows Mobile from Microsoft, 3.2%, Others including Palm and Linux hold 0.9% of 2013 market sales. 14
