Year 7 Atoms And Elements Presentation - Presentation Transcript

    1.
    2. http://omnomescience.blogspot.com/2007/06/cerns-large-hadron-collider-big-hit.html
    3. Lesson Objectives What is an atom? What is an element? How can we produce elements using chemical reactions?
    4. Matter
      • Most materials are mixtures .
      • Mixtures can be separated into pure substances.
      • E.g. What pure substances are found in the air?
      • Some pure substances are elements .
      • Elements are made of tiny particles called atoms .
      • Atoms cannot be broken down, even by chemical reactions.
    5.
    6. Can you find 1) H for Hydrogen, 2) O for Oxygen and 3) Mn for Manganese?
    7. Manganese Dioxide + Hydrogen Peroxide
      • One way of making an element
      • – decomposition of a compound.
      • Manganese dioxide is a catalyst that speeds up the reaction.
      • Hydrogen peroxide  water + oxygen
      • 2 H 2 0 2  2 H 2 0 + O 2
What is the test for O 2 ?
    8. The glowing splint test
      • Did you see this during the Flash Bang demos?
    9. The pop test
    10. Experiment - Metals and Acids Here we are making the element HYDROGEN gas. You should note any changes and differences between the reactions. Can you think of at least three SAFETY considerations for an experiment in which you are adding a metal to an acid? METAL + ACID  SALT + HYDROGEN
    11. Electrolysis of Copper Chloride What elements do we make using this method?
    12. Lesson Objectives What is an atom? What is an element? How can we produce elements using chemical reactions? a) b) c)
      • Lesson Objectives
      • What is an atom?
      • Tiny particles of matter
      • Cannot be broken up by chemical reactions
      • What is an element?
      • - One type of atom
      • Some of the ways we can produce elements using chemical reactions?
      • a) Decomposition
      • b) Metal + Acid

    13. THANK YOU
      • Please visit my website to learn more about any aspect of science you are doing at school.

      • Have you learned your objectives and behaved safely?
      • Then you deserve a MERIT!
