Nsa network (edtech 541)

  1. 1. North Star Shared Network Server BY CHIOMA UMUNAKWE
  2. 2. WHAT IS A NETWORK? A network is a communication system used to connect two or more users A computer network has 3 components;  Clients – user workstation and peripherals  Infrastructure- the wires, fiber optics, or transmission media that data moves through  Networking electronics – devices that move, route, and store data for users
  3. 3. TWO DIFFERENT TYPES OF NETWORKS LAN (Local Area Network)  A network where all clients share a common infrastructure (wires) and are usually in the same building, or group of buildings WAN ( Wide Area Network)  Spans a larger geographic area. It can be comprised of different LANs that are not close together  The North Star Shared Network Drive is a WAN
  4. 4. TO LEARN MORE…
  5. 5. NSA SHARED NETWORK DRIVE When you are in one of the NSA buildings, access to the drive is relatively easy  You are already connected!  Go to the “Start” menu and select “computer”  The shared drives (including the video files) are already up and ready for you to use!
  6. 6. NSA SHARED DRIVE FROM HOME What do you do if you are not in an NSA building?  You must be on your NSA laptop  Using Internet Explorer, go to https://sslvpn.mindshift.com  Use your outlook username and password to log in  Go to the “Start” menu and select “computer”  You will not be able to access the video files away from the building because of their size. If you try to access videos, they will be VERY slow and choppy.
  7. 7. UPLOADING A FILE TO THE SERVER This can be done at a NSA campus or away You must be connected to the server Go to the „Start‟ menu and select „computer‟ Select the drive you want to use Select the folder you want to use Save the file using the same destination
  8. 8. BEST PRACTICES FOR UPLOADING Always look for the appropriate folder first. Do not add any additional folders unless you are 100% that there is no appropriate folder already created. Avoid SPRAWL! Following name conventions already present in the folder. Email links when collaborating on documents. If you replace a version, delete the old version
  9. 9. IT‟S YOUR TURN! There is a folder on the network drive named „NSA PD Practice‟ where you will upload your sample document The naming convention is as follows; jsmith_Pdsample Upload your file following the directions in the previous slides We will see if you were able to do this if we find your file in the folder Happy uploading!
  10. 10. QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS? Please contact your school‟s Director of Operations if you have any trouble connecting to the shared network drive If you have further technical questions or complications, please reach out to Mindshift customer care technicians
