    Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Eventually man learned to write and make symbols. Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Writing grew and took new shapes and forms… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Johannes Gutenberg around 1440 – grew in Western Europe very rapidly. Then came MOVEABLE TYPE… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Moveable type helped to revolutionize how information traveled… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

This led to mass printing of books and eventually Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

    Newspapers… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Around 1895, Different magnetic and electrical distortions were able to be used to transmit sound… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Ships were able to send signals between each other to communicate using special signals of beeps and dashes…After Titanic sank, this became standard on all ships. Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Another way information started to travel between people was through radio… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

So these forms of how information traveled became known as the MEDIUM – the way the messages got from one person to another. Looking at where we are now, this could all be considered “old” media. Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Everyone had been talking about podcasts but I really didn’t know what they were…so I did some research. The term PODCAST is really a combination of a few things. Let’s look at the first part… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

The “pod” is kind of an acronym standing for PERSONAL ON DEMAND…meaning the content we’re talking about can be personal to me or to my liking. That’s good – I like me. Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

The second part of the term comes from the word BROADCAST. When we talk about broadcasting here we are talking about how to get that content OUT to those that want it…this can be represented in our minds by a figurative broadcasting tower… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

And we’re going to put together and this is where we get the term PODCAST. A podcast is a piece of media (audio or video) that someone has created and is broadcasting through the internet for you to download. Podcasts are giving everyone a voice… Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

I came to find all kinds of podcasts I could listen to that everyday people out there were creating. They were creating content that was interesting to me and I could download it for FREE. Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Through my adventures, I found that there were podcasts related to education. Found some great ones where teachers, technology leaders, principals, administrators would share their thoughts on education or have discussion on various topics. I even found some teachers that were working with their students to create a podcast on a topic or a podcast about the school! Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

All kinds of CONTENT you can find through iTunes and you don’t need an iPOD to check it out…encourage you to try it out. Anyway … back to the story: Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

Podcasts can be VIDEO as well. Some might even argue that if you are putting out videos as a regular series, that things on YOUTUBE and TEACHERTUBE might fall under the “video podcast” umbrella Mr. Kafka Podcast Notes

      • You will create a script for a Podcast about YOU!
      • Total show will be 2-3 minutes. No other audio at first other than your voice. (we will add music and effects later)
      • Topic can be of your choosing…
      • Create Your Script
        • Opening - Think of a fancy opening for your podcast. What will attract the listener to keep listening? (15-20 seconds)
        • Content - Tell the listener some information about you. What do you like to do? What did you do this summer? Sports? Hobbies? Fun? (1-2 minutes)
        • Closing - Thanking the viewer for listening (10-20 seconds)

    38. Podcasting: Your Pre-Production
      • Script Writing Tips
        • Think about your audience and use appropriate language.
        • Write as you speak. Be conversational. Don't have to use formal language.
        • Keep reading your scripts out loud to check how sounds.
        • Avoid repeating the same word(s) too often.
        • Avoid repeating the same word(s) too often. :)
          • Common Examples: Actually, Then, And, So, But
        • Write any words which are tricky to pronounce phonetically.
          • Example: phonetically = phone-et-ick-lee
        • The average person speaks about 3 words per second
        • … So plan for 80-90 words for about 30 seconds of you talking for your podcast.
