WORLDS WORST CITIES
Years 7 & 8
Suggested lesson sequence
Outcome: pupils will have made decisions about the order of the list of worst cities and formulated a new order for the list (there will be evidence of research and planning, evaluation of sources, GIS, effective questioning and ICT for presentation, extended writing)
Introduce the issue – discussion, thinking, group work to formulate initial response, etc.
Explain the task and how to undertake research (use slides to link to level criteria, investigation sequence and road to knowledge) Will be on website.
Lesson in IT suite / LRC – find out about the countries (start with development indicators and recent events, what type of city – industrial, tourist etc).
Good way to introduce effective use of Google Earth
Pupils to plan how they will present their final piece (an argument for re-ordering of the list).
Time: 2 weeks (including lesson time)
Pupils will : through examining a geographical issue in the news (4g)
Ask geographical questions
Suggest investigation sequences
Analyse evidence and draw conclusions
Make decisions and develop analytical skills
Develop geographical imaginations of places
Use atlases, globes, maps, photographs, satellite images
Begin to use GIS
Locate places and environments and describe the human and physical features of these places
Identify countries in different states of development and begin to explain reasons for this
Consider how places are represented in different ways (cultural diversity)
Identify bias, opinion and abuse of evidence and asking questions about sources and validity
Communicate knowledge and understanding using appropriate geographical vocabulary using extended writing and well selected presentation styles, using ICT where appropriate

Extended Task Worlds Worst Cities Investigation
You must find out about each city in the Lonely Planet list and make decisions about the order of the list.
You must show evidence of how you planned your investigation and make decisions about your enquiry questions.
You must select information from a variety of sources of information (one must be Google Earth).
You must select how to present your findings and your final changes to the list – with a clear explanation of why you chose this method.
To be able to give reasons for your views about Wolverhamptons place on the list (L4)

You must reorder the list and justify your decision.
You must show your planning and all ideas/notes as you complete the task.
The final piece of work can be in any format – but must include a written part (in your own words) explaining the order of your list. What do you think would be appropriate?

Rule 3 : use a variety of sources (not just internet searches or wiki). Try a book, newspaper or tv programme!
