Fractures

 1. 1. Fractures
By: Cassandra Fox
June 20, 2010
2. 2. Fracture

A fracture is a broken bone. There are many different ways to get a fracture. Also, there are many different types of fractures.
 3. 3. The four I will discuss are compound fracture, spiral fracture and comminuted fracture, all of which are pictured below.

Oblique Fracture

An oblique fracture is a fracture at an angle to the bone.
 4. 4. An oblique fracture occurs due to the trapping of one bone, while the other bone twists over it.
 5. 5. X-ray’s can be used to diagnose fractures, however with these a CT scan or MRI can give a more accurate diagnosis.
 6. 6. If the damage to the bone is bad reconstructive surgery is performed. If the damage is small enough and should not affect the impending movement of the bone a cast may be sufficient.

Oblique fracture pictures

Compound Fracture

A compound fracture, also called an open fracture is fracture in which the bone is sticking through the skin.
 7. 7. Immediate surgery is usually required for this type of fracture.
 8. 8. The surgery involves the realignment of the ends of the fractured bones, and immobilization of the fracture, either by fixing the bone internally or by using external splints.

Compound fracture pictures

Spiral Fracture

A spiral fracture, is a fracture in which a bone has been twisted apart.
 9. 9. The treatments for dealing with fractures include surgery or holding the fracture in a cast until it heals completely.
 10. 10. Surgeries such as internal fixation which includes the use of pins, metal rods, may be used to put the broken bones back to their place.

Spiral fracture pictures

Comminuted Fracture

A comminuted fracture is a fracture when a bone is broken, splintered or crushed into a number of pieces.
 11. 11. To treat this fracture you may need surgery to fix the bones, so they can knit together and heal fast. In some severe cases, the whole bone has to be exposed and fixed with pins and then placed in its normal position.
 12. 12. Several follow up appointments are needed to ensure the bone fracture is setting correctly.

Comminuted fracture pictures
