      • Approached people with a certain mindset
Based upon this episode, what can you say about his approach to reaching people?
    3. 1. Rely on God
      • Relying on God
        • Means to partner with God in the work of the harvest
        • Bible compares our task to being like farming
    4. Like a farmer
      • The farmer’s work…
        • Tilling soil
        • Planting seed
        • Cultivating
        • Harvesting
      • Only God can bring the growth!
      • Ministry is not passive!
    5. Where is God in All of This?
      • Draws People
      • Reveals Himself
      • Convicts
      • Converts
      • Proclaim Good News
      • Persuade
      • Follow-up
      • Fellowship
      God’s Role Man’s Role
    6. 2. The “audience-first mindset”
      • This refers not just to seeing things from the perspective of the people we communicate with
      • It also includes understanding their
        • Social
        • Cultural
        • Technological
        • Theological backgrounds
        • Other environmental factors
    7. The Apostle Paul
      • Paul’s Mindset
      • Tailored his approach to the needs of his audience
      • Did not compromise the message
      • All things to all men—not one thing to all men (One size fits all) focus depended on audience
      • Never all things to all men all at the same time -able to target
      • Consistent method
    8. 1 Corinthians 9:19-22
      • 19 For though I be free from all men, yet have I made myself servant unto all, that I might gain the more.
      • 20 And unto the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain the Jews; to them that are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain them that are under the law;
      • 21 To them that are without law, as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law.
      • 22 To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
    9. I might paraphrase the scripture above from Paul as…
      • “ I am slavish in my adaptation of the presentation and approach to various people because I want to make the gospel more understandable to the people I am trying to reach.”
    10. Jesus Christ
      • Relied upon the Father
      • “ Audience-first” mindset
        • Samaritan Woman at the Well
        • Nicodemus
        • Rich Young Ruler
      • Can you think of other examples?
    11. The Apostle Paul
      • In Athens
If Paul were alive today, and he chose to return to Athens and go back to Mars Hill and preach to the people there, would he be as effective?
    12. The Apostle Paul
      • Paul would be effective even today!
This is the power and beauty of his mindset. He could easily adapt his approach to the people he wanted to reach. Paul had a “ Ministry-Marketing Mindset .” It’s one that always begins with the background, perspective and needs of the people you want to reach.
    13. Speaking to Needs Paul seems to have understood that in order to get the people’s attention and be able to speak to them, he had to understand their needs. The needs of the Athenians affected the approach of Paul .
    14. Audiences in Athens
      • Hellenistic Jews: An Internal Audience with a background in the Bible
      • Epicureans: Freedom from fear and pain
      • Stoics: Emancipate yourself from mundane
      • People of the Aereopagus
      • Oklahoma is no less diverse!
    15. Paul’s Presentation and Approach
      • Paul was greatly disturbed personally at the idolatry of the people of Athens, but he did not make his feelings the starting point of how he approached the Athenians.
      • Instead, he spoke to them based on their perceptions and needs.
      • He even affirmed them saying they were “religious” people
      • He spoke to them as people who might be interested in learning about the UNKNOWN GOD.
    16. New Old Known Unknown Okay, what would be the best way to communicate the message here?
    17. New Old Known Unknown “ Take a Number Buddy!” I Proclaim a New Unknown Idea!
    18. New Old Known Unknown “ Yawn...Been there Done that!” I Proclaim a Known Old Idea!
    19. New Old Known “ You? The ‘Babbler’… Yeah, Right!” I Proclaim What you are Now Talking about! The Newest Ideas! Unknown
    20. New Old Known Unknown “ You are Bringing Strange things to Our Ears, and We Want to Know What They Mean…” What You Worship as Something Unknown I am Going to Proclaim to You
    21. The Apostle Paul
      • Paul would be effective even in Oklahoma City!
He would adapt his approach to the people he wanted to reach. Paul would begin with the background, perspective and needs of the people in our state!
    22. People Don’t Worship at the “Altar of the Unknown God” in OKC…or do they?
      • People in our state have a concept of God that is wrong.
      • It is a god of their own making but they don’t realize it!
      • They relate to their spirituality as a vital part of their life.
      • What they worship in ignorance, you can make plain
      • If we understand them and start where they are..(and leave our comfort zones) we can reach them!
      • Just like Paul did!
