    • Who was Saint George?
    • Can you tell the legend?
    • How does England celebrate Saint George’s Day?
    • How is the English flag? What does it mean?
    • Who is the famous Englishman is said to have been born and to have died on April 23 rd ? And what famous Spanish writer died the same day as well?
    • What day is the 23 rd of April?
  • 3. Who is Saint George?
    • Saint George is the patron saint of England. His emblem is the flag of England.
    • He was born during the III Century A.D. (After Christ Death) in the old Capadoccia (nowadays is Turkey). He was a brave Roman soldier who protested against the Roman’s torture of the Christians and died for his beliefs.
    • I n the 12th century the emblem was adopted by Richard The Lionheart whose soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle.
  • 4. Can you tell the legend?
    • There is a dragon who terrorizes a town.
    • The people in town do a raffle and the King’s daughter, a young princess , is offered to the dragon .
    • When George heard s about this he r ides into the village .
    • George kills the dragon and rescue s the princess .
  • 5. How does England celebrate Saint George’s Day?
    • On the Sunday nearest to 23 rd of April, scouts and guides throughout England parade through high streets and attend a special St George's Day service at their local church .
    • By tradition is the day for a red rose in the button hole, the national flower. It is not as celebrated as St Patrick ’s day.
    • For most people in England St George's Day is just another ordinary working day.
    • In fact, m ore than a quarter of people living in England do not even know who their patron saint is!
  • 6. How is the English flag? What does it mean?
    • The flag has got a red cross of a martyr in the middle on a white background.
    • The colours mean :
    • White : peace and honesty
    • Red : - hardiness, bravery, strength and valour .
  • 7. Who is the famous Englishman that was born and died on April 23 rd ? And what famous Spanish writer died the same day as well?
    • Shakespeare was born on 23 rd of April 1564 and he died on the same day in 1616 .
    • Miguel de Cervantes died on the 22nd of April but buried on the 23rd of April. That is why we commemorate his death.

  • 8. What day is the 23 rd of April?
    • It’s Saint George’s Day.
    • In 1923 a writer from Valencia, Vicens Clavell, chooses this day to give a book in Saint George’s Day because Cervantes and Shakespeare dead that day.
    • In 1995 Unesco chooses that day to become the International Day of the Book. This is to promote reading, publishing and copyright.
    • A Golf cup is celebrated during that day.
