heart as much as possible.

Festivals
Means of transport
Special occasions, e.g. birthday celebrations
Entertainment, e.g. cinema, television, clubs
Music
Recent personal experiences
Ask the examiner at least one question in each phase.
[Topic phase (up to 5 mins)]
[Examiner and candidate sit at desk, examiner has his materials in front of her, and candidate has
his/her topic form in front of him/her.]
E: Hello. My name’s Amanda. [shakes hands with candidate] What’s your name?
C: My name’s Sofía.
E: Nice to meet you, Sofía. How are you?
C: Fine, thanks. And how are you?
E: Fine, thank you, Sofía. Can I just check your identity? [Checks ID]
C: Yes, of course.
E: Thank you. Now, we’re going to start with your Topic. Can I have your Topic form please?
[E takes candidate’s Topic form. The Topic form says “My dance club” as the title. The other 5
boxes say the following “About my dance club”, “The types of dance in my club”, “Why I
joined the club”, “Ballet competitions”, “Professional ballet”]
So we’re going to talk about…?
C: I’m going to talk about my dance club.
E: Ok, let’s start with this: tell me about why you joined the club.
C: I have loved dancing since I was a little girl, but I only danced in my house. And I no-one in
my house likes dancing!
E: And none of your friends danced? (1)
C: No, not in the beginning. So I joined a club because I wanted to meet new friends and learn
new dances with them.
E: And how long have you been in the dance club?
C: Ooooo, for about 4 years now. Since I was 6.
E: And have you made any new friends?
C: Yes, I’ve made lots of friends!
E: And what about your friends: have they joined the club? (2)
Comentario [KS1]: Please ensure
candidate has some ID to show.
Comentario [MG2]: This is the current
official rubric.
Comentario [KS3]: For these notes
numbered 1 to 14, please see ‘Notes for
examiner’ document also provided.
2. 2
C: Yes, three of my friends have joined the club now. And I think another friend will join next
month.
E: But what about the different types of dance in your club? [Examiner points to the point on
the Topic form](3)
C: Ahh, there are lots of different dances. In the club, we practise salsa, flamenco, ballet, disco,
jazz…
E: That’s a lot of different dances! (4)
C: Yes! I’ve learnt a lot of different styles.
E: And you prefer….? (5)
C: I think I prefer ballet.
E: Ballet? (6)
C: Yes, ballet. I like it because it’s very elegant and it makes me very strong.
E: Ok, thanks. Now, I’ve never been to a dance club. [Examiner points to the point on the Topic
form.] Can you tell me more about it? (7)
C: Yes. It’s a club in a theatre. We go there after school. I’ve been a member, like I said, for 4
years.
E: And do you always practise your dancing on the stage?
C: Oh no! There is a special room with lots of mirrors, because it’s important to see how your
body moves when you’re dancing.
E: So do you prefer dancing in the practice room? (8)
C: No, on the stage! I like to be a part of the dance show, with an audience, and the lights and
the costumes and make-up.
E: Have you danced in many shows?
C: Yes, I have! I’ve danced in, I think, 10 shows.
E: All of them ballet? (8)
C: No, not all of them. I’ve danced in shows for every type of dance in the club.
E: And I see here that you’ve taken part in some ballet competitions[ Examiner points to the
point on the Topic form]? (1)
C: Yes, I have! Have you ever seen a ballet competition?
E: No! I’ve never seen one.
C: It’s a lot of fun! You can have individual competitions for the best dancer and you have
group competitions with other dance clubs.
E: And you prefer…? (5)
C: I think I prefer group competitions because I like dancing with my friends. It’s more fun.
E: And have you ever won any competitions?
C: Yes, I’ve won, I think 3, competitions.
E: Three?! As a group, or…? (5)
C: One as a group and two individual competitions.
E: Congratulations!
C: Thanks!
E: And all of these competitions were for ballet? (8)
C: No, I’ve done competitions in ballet, jazz, salsa and flamenco
E: But not disco? (10)
C: No, not yet. But I think I’ll enter a disco competition next year.
E: An individual competition? (10)
C: No, I think I’ll enter a group competition with my friends.
E: Ok, thanks Sofía. Now we’re going to talk about something different.
[Conversation phase (up to 5 mins)]
Comentario [MG4]: NB, this is the 4
th
Topic point to be discussed. It is extremely
common to stop at the 4
th
as time usually
doesn’t allow a 5
th
to be discussed. It is
useful to highlight this point to candidates
and I have not included a 5
th
point for
discussion as what we have here is coming
up to 5 minutes already.
Comentario [MG5]: This is the current
official rubric.
3. 3
E: Let’s talk about entertainment. There are lots of different types of entertainment: cinema,
TV, books, radio, theatre. What do you prefer?
C: I really like films and books.
E: Films on TV? (9)
C: Yes, but I really like going to the cinema.
E: What’s the difference between watching a film in the cinema and watching it on TV? (10)
C: I think that… in the cinema the screen is bigger. The sound is louder.
E: So you prefer watching films on TV? (8)
C: No! I prefer the cinema because I can watch it with my friends and it’s more exciting.
E: But you also like books? (11)
C: Yes, I love reading.
E: [In place of speech, examiner smiles and nods head to encourage further information] (12)
C: I’ve read lots and lots of books!
E: Have you ever read a book and seen the film of the same story?
C: Yes, I have. I have read all of the Harry Potter books and I’ve seen some of the films.
E: Aha. (13)
C: Yes. But I didn’t like the films. For me, when you read the book you can imagine the
characters and the scenes. But in the film… there’s no imagination. What about you? Do you
prefer the film or the book?
E: Hmm… I don’t know…. Probably I prefer the book, like you. I like to imagine the characters.
How many films have you seen this year in the cinema?
C: I think I’ve been to the cinema four times this year. Yes, four times.
E: And how many books have you read this year?
C: A lot more! I think I’ve read maybe 10 books this year?!
E: 10? (6)
C: Yes, 10! I really love reading. I like the fantasy novels with vampires.
E: And do you like more traditional stories? (10)
C: Sometimes, but I prefer fantasy novels. For my next book, I think I’ll start reading the Lord of
the Rings – but I know it’s very long!
E: It is. And have you been to the cinema recently?
C: No I haven’t been since my birthday. That was 4 months ago!
E: What did you see? (10)
C: I saw ‘Frozen’. It was a good film. My younger sister likes it too. But I prefer real films, not
cartoons.
E: What’s the best film you’ve seen?
C: I loved ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.
E: That’s a very good film! (4)
C: Yes. I loved it. And I think I’ve seen it 8 or 9 times!
E: That’s a lot! (6)
C: Yes, I know. I really love that film!
E: Ok, Thank you. Now let’s talk about special occasions. How important is your birthday to
you?
C: Oh, it’s very important! I love my birthday!
E: And what do you do on your birthday?
C: I always have a big party! I like to go to a restaurant, and I see all of my best friends.
E: Some people prefer birthdays with their families. Some people prefer birthdays with their
friends. What about you? (3)
C: I think that I prefer to be with my family in the day, but in the evening I prefer spending time
with my friends.
E: Why?
4. 4
C: Because in the day, my family and I can do things together and in the evening I can have a
pizza with my friends and we can dance and play games. And I get more presents!
E: I think everybody likes a present! (4)
C: Yes!
E: Have you ever received a big surprise present?
C: Yes! Last year, my parents gave me a puppy.
E: For Christmas? (9)
C: No, for my birthday. I was really surprised when they came into the room with this little
puppy. It was the best birthday present that I‘ve ever had.
E: And have you ever received a present that you didn’t like?
C: No, not yet! Have you?
E: No, I’ve never had anything bad. Have you had your birthday yet this year?
C: No, not yet. My birthday is next month.
E: How old will you be?
C: I’ll be 11.
E: Well happy birthday for next month! What about other special occasions: I love my birthday,
but I also like going to weddings. (14)
C: I really like weddings, too! I have a big family so I’ve been to lots of weddings.
E: How many weddings have you been to?
C: I don’t know – maybe ten!
E: Ten?! (6)
C: Yes, it’s a lot, I know. But I have a big family.
E: Have you been to a wedding recently?
C: No, not recently. But my mum thinks my uncle will get married next year, so maybe I’ll go to
another wedding then.
E: Ok. Well it was very nice talking to you, Sofía. We’ve finished.
C: Ok, thanks.
E: Thanks Sofía. Bye!
C: Bye!
