CEED 2007 Material

 1. 1. CEED 2007 I do not claim this to be a bible for CEED but this could help! Bhushan Patil NOTE: Not for public circulation
 2. 2. What is CEED CEED is an examination to build your carrier in design, this is entrance taken by IITs to let you enter into IITs, IISCs design courses.
 3. 3. What is CEED all about

CEED, tests the following aspects in any candidate,

Aptitude

Creative thinking

Extrapolation capabilities

Quick thinking

Putting yourself into shoes of different personas

Curiosity to think beyond an average person

General Knowledge

Seeing things around you in different way than a typical perso would see

Ability to find critical as well as appreciating facts about things around you

 4. 4. Who can apply?

CEED is open to all, as far as my knowledge goes it’s open for

Engineers

Architects

BFA/ MFA (Art background candidates)

 5. 5. What do I prepare for this? As CEED tests your general skills there are no definite patterns or sources of information available to you to RATTOFY before examination! Most of it depends on how you have been looking around so far in life, your creativity (by birth and developed) However there are some basics which you may want to brush up ( See next slide):
 6. 6. What do I prepare for this?

To Brush up:

Start looking at products – both physical as well as non physical (like websites)

Get your drawing skills developed (try not to copy someone, typically my experience is every one is good in some drawing method, so develop on it)

Given a problem think how can you pictorially solve this? Or show the problem with it with some key pictures

Learn perspective views (you can use may be ND Bhatt or any architectural design book to get this funda) This is especially Imp for engg who do not know this!

Think of association of design elements, colors wrt. Context, Event, time of day, occasion etc. Read some data onlin on how to use colors and their meanings. This will help you suggest colors or actually use them during examination. Also note some rules like GREEN means all clear, RED means problem/danger etc. So these colors cannot be overwritten while using (See Appendix too for colors)

 7. 7. What do I prepare for this?

To Brush up:

Think of association of design elements: Why the mouse buttons are on left and right (horizontally stacked) and not vertically stacked?, Why is there a joy stick for kids video games than a mouse with buttons, why the volume button on a good music system is typically big, Why some products have pictures /signs like STOP, Danger, PRESS etc. and how do they use it

Learn colors wrt.

 8. 8. What do I prepare for this?

To Brush up:

If you are not excellent in drawing take help of symbols, icons etc. Example if you have to show a man drinking tea – you can either give lot of attention to his nose, ear, cloths etc. or you can simply use symbols. Have you seen the signage on road do they show you all details but they convey the maening! So think of it. (NOTE: Do not take this literally – this is just a guideline, if someone asks you draw a good human face, you cannot put a symbol)

Learn little about materials – plastics, metals, clay, dough, etc. Think if you can use them for some things and why will you use it, say why the purse is mad with leather why not metal or plastic etc.

General knowledge: this is open ended just ask yourself a question am I in top 1000 to 10,000 people in India of your age or class in general knowledge? if the answer if yes I think that would be good ;-)

 9. 9. Sample problems?

I have a spherical water tank and I need to calibrate the same without damaging the tank – how will I do this?

With a paper mesh come out with a stackable stand for storing bananas like EGGS

Draw a simple pencil drawing of a mouse (engg note mous has very few straight edges so it’s hard – try yourself 1 st and then see a sample by clicking here – simple drawing showing exact replica of mouse)

Draw 50 triangles on a page then do something to thins triangles to create 50 different products – example attached a handle to it it can show a kitchen utensil and so on

Write 5 top things you think say “Reliance Mobile” has done in India to capture the market?

Draw a new cartoon face which will be a next generation “Y!Man” like superman, he-man etc. It should attract kids.

NOTE: these are just samples, due to time I cannot give comments on answers if you come across, but think of these questions as a sample, this will help!

 10. 10. What will help me to stand out? This is very important, imagine if everyone draws a picture of say a new car-concept for year 2010, you have so many solutions every ones solution will be different! So your design has to stand out – like if you keep it out everyone should say WOW! This is great! As said earlier – Think about what’s so different in your design, why your is best, Try to use – Pictures, text, colors, blow up diagram, details diagram etc. Example: Sample diagram 1 – Click here Sample diagram 2 – click here
 11. 11. What’s the future?

With the new markets opening in India there is a very bright future in product design , visual communication as well as in Animations.

Possible Roles you can play in companies

Designer

Animation expert

Design Analyst

Market survey/data expert

Business model expert

Web design, software product information architecting, visual designer,

User expert

Art director etc.
