Hispanic Demographics & Influence <ul><li>The Hispanic population is growing as a function of high birth rates as well as immigration. </li></ul><ul><li>Despite current disparities in income levels, Hispanics are expected to come close to the U.S. average household income over time. </li></ul><ul><li>Consumer patterns of consumption will change as income levels increase, and it is expected that Hispanics will spend more on healthcare, utilities and education. </li></ul>Larger Demographic Representation by Latinos + Increased Purchasing Power + Greater Demand for Quality Education & Quality Leadership Latinos have substantial and growing economic and social impact in America.
  3. 3. Hispanic Demographics & Influence Hispanics have been showing the fastest demographic growth as a category of the U.S. Population:
  4. 4. <ul><li>Estimated purchasing power of Hispanics in 2008: $1 trillion / 9.6% of U.S. GDP </li></ul><ul><li>3.1% of Fortune 500 board seats were occupied by Hispanics in 2006 (more than doubled since 2003 when it was only 1.9%). </li></ul><ul><li>Hispanic-owned businesses in the U.S. are growing three times faster than national average rates (generated $200+ Billion in 2002) </li></ul>Will the leaders of this critical demographic be trained at Duke – or elsewhere? To what extent will Duke graduates be exposed to diverse perspectives during their time at Duke? Hispanic Demographics & Influence

Duke’s Strategic Vision & The Importance of Diversity at Duke <ul><li>Duke, per the 2006 Strategic Plan and past commitments, understands the importance of improving the diversity of the student body and the faculty, while maintaining and even raising the bar in its admission and hiring standards. </li></ul><ul><li>Duke is competing with other top academic institutions for the best talent in this critical, growing demographic. </li></ul><ul><li>Duke is fighting an uphill battle in the competition for top minority students; i.e. the Durham location may not compare favorably with larger metropolitan areas in the eyes of top Latino talent. </li></ul>

DULAA Scholarship as a Compliment to Other Pro-Diversity Efforts <ul><li>Several concurrent efforts, both nascent and established, are being employed by the University to improve diversity : </li></ul><ul><li>Duke Latino Student Recruitment Weekend </li></ul><ul><li>Robust Latino student groups </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Sabrosura – A Latin dance troop </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>LUL Fraternity, LPC Sorority – Greek organizations </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Mi Gente & El Concilio – Ugrad and Umbrella organizations </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Latino Studies program </li></ul><ul><li>Duke Latin@ Alumni Association </li></ul><ul><li>Latino/a Scholarship! </li></ul>

Reggie Howard Scholarship – A Compelling Model at Duke <ul><li>The Reggie Howard scholarship is a compelling model, as it has been wildly successful. </li></ul><ul><li>Contributes to attraction of great African American talent </li></ul><ul><li>Builds community among students and alumni </li></ul><ul><li>Reduces the burden of education cost on a historically underprivileged demographic </li></ul>
  9. 9. Latin@ Scholarship Status <ul><li>The Latino Scholarship to date: </li></ul><ul><li>Over $100,000 raised to date </li></ul><ul><li>From over 80 donors </li></ul><ul><li>Distributions will begin shortly </li></ul>

Benefits to Growing the Scholarship Name Promotion: Community-Building: <ul><li>Creates a sense of stronger unity, both within the existing Hispanic community and Duke </li></ul><ul><li>Encourages Hispanic alumni to feel a deeper sense of attachment by impacting the direction of change at their alma mater by funding this scholarship </li></ul><ul><li>Crafts a mentorship opportunity between current scholars and alumni </li></ul><ul><li>Attracts Hispanic leaders who will influence the fastest growing segment of the U.S. population </li></ul><ul><li>Promotes even stronger alumni donations </li></ul><ul><li>Advances the efforts of aspiring and outstanding individuals from Hispanic communities to succeed under the banner of Duke </li></ul>
