  • 1. What were griots?Griots were West African storytellers.They werethought as historians, entertainers, as well asstorytellers.Also known as a verbal artist.
  • Folktales were told in West Africa because it was away to entertain one’s audience, but yet teach theyoung people lessons as well as preserve WestAfrica’s history.
  • West Africans used proverbs to give advice or toexpress ideas.These proverbs promoted deepthought and intellect.

  • 1. Why was music important in West Africa?Music was important in West Africa because itcommunicated ideas, values and feelings. It was usedin various celebrations: historic events, weddings,funerals, and ceremonies that honored theirancestors.
  • Call and response was a method to alleviate stressand to lessen the pain of hard physical labor. Itbasically got people’s minds off the task that theywere doing and allow them to think of other things.

  • 1. Why were masks an essential part of West African culture?West African Masks were used to honor their deadancestors and to celebrate everyday events.
  • The Kente cloth is the most famous textile in WestAfrica.This cloth is used to tell the history of theperson who made the cloth/design and to alsoexpress values, politics and other events that arehappening around West Africa.
