The original purpose of Russian ballet was to entertain the royal court. <br />In the early 19th century the theatres opened up to the public to anyone who could afford to go. <br />There was a seating section called a rayok or “paradise gallery” that had wooden benches as seats, so the non-wealthy class could enjoy the ballet .<br />The Ballet<br />
  3. 3. The first ballet company was the Imperial School of Ballet in St. Petersburg in the 1740’s. <br />The Ballet Russe was a ballet company founded in 1909 by a man named Sergey Diaghilev; who is a very important figure in Russian ballet. <br />The Ballet Cont’d.<br />

After Diaghilev founded Ballet Russe many Russian dancers became famous. <br />One in particular is Anna Pavlova, she was one of the most renowned dancers of her time. <br />She is most recognized for the creation of the role The Dying Swan with her company and she became the first ballerina to tour around the world. <br />The Ballet Cont’d<br />
