Conferencing on the Cheap With Web 2 - Presentation Transcript

  1. Make a simple Web-based Conference Room with Web 2.0 By Chaz Maloney FREEWARE
  2. A good question… Is it possible to “mash up” a bunch of freebie Web 2.0 tools onto a single web page to create a virtual conference room? at least i think so
  3. The answer… YES!
  4. How I built a Conference Room ‘Mash-up’… the roughly six steps:
    • First I had to decide what are the most important tools for the conference room?
    • Go out and find the tools. There is a free embeddable tool for just about everything.
    • Get a copy of the free tool and collect the html and javascript snippets required to embed the tool.
    • Build a single web page container for the snippets.
    • Put the web page on a host.
    • Invite several people to the web page for a test run.
  5. What are the most important web2.0 tools to include?
      • I selected four for my first attempt (you might look for different tools):
        • Slide presenter tool
        • Voice over IP tool
        • Chat tool
        • File download
  6. Finding the tools…
    • Slide presenter tool = slideshare.net
    • Voice over IP tool = yackpack.com
    • Chat tool = meebo.com
    • File download = for now, just a hyperlink to a file on my website 
  7. Harvesting embeddable html and javascript snippets
  8. Build a web page…
    • Use your favorite wysiwyg editor to create a table with an appropriately sized cell for each tool.
    • Go to code reveal and paste in the tool embedding snippets for each tool.
    • Save the page
    • Load the page to a web server!
  9. Now, invite a few people to see your nifty and sleek conference room. Join me in my fancy online conference room: http:// www.radford.edu/ccosmato/room /
  10. Was that fun? Want to tell me about your own crazy Instructional Technology projects? [email_address] Haters: don’t bother “griefing” me if you don’t like the project, it was just for fun! -Cheers!
