China’s GB industry has played an increasingly important role in China’s economic growth over the last thirty years with its rapid development gradually. Especially during the past decade, domestic GB has made considerable progress in production scaling-up, technology innovations and applications.

GB industry in China in following fields has witnessed significant development and progress. - Genetically modified crops and their breeding GM crops is the most fast-growing field among all applications of GB in China and has seen increasingly brighter prospect under governmental guidance. As of 2009, Chinese government has approved commercial production of six GM crops, namely cotton, tomato, morning-glory, sweet pepper, papaya and poplar, but currently, only GM cotton has achieved commercialized plantation at home. - Clone and transgenic animal Development of clone animal and transgenic animal is still under research stage in China though many technology breakthroughs have been made in this field. Currently, there is no related product sold in the market, due to various reasons with ineffective technology and R&D ability the most outstanding. - Biological pesticide Chinese biological pesticide industry is another rapid-developing field adopting GB techniques in China. Especially in the past decade, biological pesticide application is increasing largely. Total output of Chinese biological pesticides has also increased rapidly with CAGR of XX% from 2004-2008. With XX biological pesticide producers, most Chinese biological producers are universally small-scale, among which only XX~XX biological pesticide companies in China have annual sales value exceeding USDXX million. - Bio-fertilizer China’s bio-fertilizer industry has scored many achievements and been optimistic in recent several years, with its increasing consumption volume, seeing CAGR of XX% from 2005 to 2008. There were totally XX bio-fertilizer manufactures in 2008 and about XX have been approved by and cooperated with the Ministry of Agriculture. Most of them are of small scale with total output of about XX million tonnes in 2008, taking up only XX% of total fertilizer output in China. - Biological veterinary medicine In China, biological veterinary medicine generally includes animal vaccines, antiserum, toxoid, etc, among which animal vaccines accounts for about XX% of the total output in 2008, and thus the

Total animal vaccines capacity has reached XX billion doses in recent several years, far higher than the annual demand of about XX billion doses in 2008. There are XX produce biological veterinary products in China, accounting for XX% of total veterinary medicine manufacturers, and XX have been GMP certified. - Biological feed additive China as one of the leading feed stuff producers in the world has largely developed biological feed additives in the past few years with expanding application and rising consumption. The feed enzyme preparation in particular, has made great breakthroughs with technological improvement in this field. Though feed enzyme preparation in feed production application still faces many problems in screening strains and fermentation technology, it’s expected to witness fast development in the future especially with improved technology in genetic engineering. At present, there are about XX feed enzyme preparation manufacturers in China, with climbing output and market value. From 2006-2008, CAGR for feed enzyme preparation out was achieved at XX%. - Others Plant bioreactor, animal bioreactor and plant tissue culture are also important application areas of GB in China. For plant bioreactor and animal bioreactor, although there are no commercial products sold in the market yet, some potential products are expecting bright prospect. For the plant tissue culture industry, it has been booming for several years, bringing many commercial opportunities. By 2008, many plant tissue culture technologies had been put into application, and the most valuable technologies in China are crop tissue culture and flower tissue culture.   9. 9. - Production In the past decade, on one hand, Chinese biological pesticide industry has developed rapidly with increasing output, with CAGR of XX% during 2004-2008. On the other hand, biological pesticide market constitutes only about 10% of domestic pesticide market. Since Jan. 1st , 2007, China has banned the use of 5 high-toxic organophosphorus insecticides, namely methamidophos, parathion, parathion-methyl, monocrotophos and phosphamidon, which suggests huge development potential for biological pesticide. The total output of biological pesticide in China was about XX tonnes in 2008, up XX% compared with 2007.
