Last month’s overall economic datawas generally weaker than had been anticipated. One example: sales of residential properties fell13.5% year on year to RMB1.03 trillion during January-April 2012, and sales of office propertiesfell 14% to RMB 54.3 billion.The situation has just prompted the Chinese Government to cut the reserve requirement ratio forlocal banks from May 18 by 50 bps to 20%. The cut was the 3rd in 6 months and frees up anadditional RMB400 billion in the banking system, although China’s major banks have declined,looking for a larger cut.The market future continues to be the subject of intense debate and has been much discussed atrecent dairy industry events – notably at SIAL in Shanghai, ADPI in Chicago and even at the DINconference in London.
