Transcript of "Got Questions 7: Jesus is Our Sabbath"

 1. 1. “ What is Sabbath rest?” “ One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.” Romans 14:5
 2. 2. Jesus is our Sabbath Rest! Genesis 2:1-3 D. Barker Nov 15, 2009

1. The most outstandingly noteworthy thing (which differs completely from the other days of creation) is the absence of any reference to an evening or a morning.

2. The supreme meaning of sabbath is rest.

3. The specific effort from which God rested was creation.

Dave Barker - with grateful acknowledgment to Ray C. Stedman 1917-1992 ( see www.raystedman.org/biography.html )
 3. 3. Jesus is our Sabbath Rest! Genesis 2:1-3 D. Barker Nov 15, 2009

4. The weekly sabbath, i.e., Saturday, is not the real sabbath. It never was, and it is not now.

5. The shadow-sabbath, (Saturday observance) ended at the cross. The true sabbath, the rest of God, God's ceasing from effort, continued and still continues today.

Dave Barker - with grateful acknowledgment to Ray C. Stedman 1917-1992 ( see www.raystedman.org/biography.html )
 4. 4. Jesus is our Sabbath Rest! Genesis 2:1-3 D. Barker Nov 15, 2009

6. God designated the true sabbath to the function of producing blessing (fruitfulness and dominion) for mankind. This is why the Lord Jesus declared, "the sabbath is made for man; not man for the sabbath," (Mark 2:27).

7. However, one serious problem remains. Christians say again and again, “Why is this so difficult to do?”

Dave Barker - with grateful acknowledgment to Ray C. Stedman 1917-1992 ( see www.raystedman.org/biography.html )
 5. 5. Jesus is our Sabbath Rest! Genesis 2:1-3 D. Barker Nov 15, 2009

“ There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God's rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following their example of disobedience.” Hebrews 4:9-11.

Dave Barker - with grateful acknowledgment to Ray C.
