LinkedIn adds lead generation power to your online marketing mix, but LinkedIn backfires when you use the "direct message" feature inappropriately. This video shows 3 examples of 3 actual lead generation messages - why one worked, one is "okay," and one is a horror show.

Lead Generation With LinkedIn: The Good, The OK, And The Ugly

  1. 1. “Lead Generation on Linked In: The Good, The OK and The Ugly” By Cathy Goodwin, Ph.D. http://www.CathyGoodwinMarketing.com
  2. 2. Get Leads From LinkedIn: 3 Accepted Strategies • Create an awesome profile. • Post to groups and to the public. • Participate in groups as a good citizen.
  3. 3. Get Leads From LinkedIn: Direct Message • More controversial • Limit to first-degree connections • Might backfire
  4. 4. “The Good” –Propose meaningful relationship –Not a vague “let’s talk about how we can help each other’s businesses”
  5. 5. The Good: Example Hope this email finds you well. I saw that we are both in the [name] group and though it would worth reaching out. I am looking for a marketing resource to possibly refer business to. I work with executives and entrepreneurs to improve their bottom line through soft skill development. However, often times their needs go beyond emotional intelligence and people skills and require marketing guidance that is beyond my expertise. Therefore, I am looking to network with another non-competing consultant who would be interested in referring business to each other. If interested, it would be great to chat sometime and learn more about how I can support your business.
  6. 6. “The Okay” Send free offer via inbox. –Be connected –Offer value –Not too often
  7. 7. The OK: Example OKAY … Here's a question for you... Your single client wants your help finding the love of their life…how do you help them? Or, your client is struggling in their relationship with their boyfriend or girlfriend (or spouse), do you have the tools to help them or do you refer them out? Here at [Company] we really want to support you to help your clients with their most important relationships AND have a successful practice. Here's a few (free, no registration necessary) resources you might find helpful- Resource 1 and link … Resource 2 and link …
  8. 8. “The Ugly” Send a sales letter via inbox
  9. 9. The Ugly: Example – 1 of 2 Hope you're doing well! I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself here on LinkedIn. I work with coaches, consultants, trainers, speakers and thought leaders to simplify their business model, create more clients and double, and in some cases, triple their revenue streams per client. I have had the privilege and opportunity to serve 100’s of coaches in my career. More than 90% of them double, even quadruple their income within 90 days and some within weeks when they implement my 3 acceleration strategies.
  10. 10. The Ugly: Example – 2 of 2 My interest in reaching out to you today is to see if we can jump on a 30 minute strategy session where I can share these 3 insights with you. It is my absolute passion to help people have outstanding lives and businesses. I can share more during our call together. I can only take on 5 strategy calls this week and I'm hoping you are one of them! Please send me a couple of times that work for you. Either way, just let me know, but do feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn so we can stay in touch.
  11. 11. Change Ugly To OK Or Good Propose a specific joint venture. Offer a gift: a video or ebook. Invite to a teleseminar, webinar or live free event. Avoid assumptions! (Do I look like I need help?) Follow up graciously.
  12. 12. Good Follow-up Strategies • Your programs look great. I would be glad to refer business your way. • It's great to see that you are a copywriting expert as well because this is an area where many struggle. I do work with solo-preneurs as well as large companies. • If you work with any solopreneurs who are overwhelmed, stressed- out, frustrated, etc, I can help...please keep me in mind. I look forward to working together some time. • PS - I saw that you are starting to do stand up. I used to work at an LA comedy club years ago...loved it! If you ever put a video together, let me know!
