Career counselors and career coaches often tell you, "The first step in a career change is to decide exactly what you want to do next." That's actually dangerous advice. As a career consultant, I find that career change often happens only after a series of explorations. People seeking mid-life career change often cut off exploration too soon because they say, "It' not what I want." Or they say, "I don't want to do that even on a temporary basis."
