Scott Thanks for the blog, but I’m a little surprised that you pose this as a refocusing of youth ministry. Everything you point out is covered very succintly and explicitly in the CMD certificate for youth ministry. The CMD challenges anyone who has gone through thier formation to do just those five things you outlined and more. Refocusing is a bit dramatic. The framework outlined in Renewing the Vision calls comprehensive youth ministry to task. Yes cpmprehensive youth ministy is messy, yes it speaking a different language at times, yes it is a long drawn out endeavor, but it is prophetic call to and for young people. I believe the emerging bounty of Young Adult ministry is a direct result of successful discipleship conversion moments in youth ministry. Your blog si great food for thougt, a reminder to those of us doing it and a call to those who are using a more narrowly focused model of ministry as opposed to a comprehensive model, but 'a time to refocus youth ministry?' No

    REFOCUSING CATHOLIC YOUTH MINISTRY

Is it time to re-vision the Vision of Youth Ministry? And is so, what should our focus be? Guests Jeff Kaster, Mike Carotta, and Sharon Bogusz all contribute to this ambitious SlideShare slidecast. If you could point towards the future of Catholic Youth Ministry, in which direction should we go?? Please comment and contribute to the conversation,

  7. Church documents agree that adolescent catechesis seeks to form adolescent Christian disciples.
  8. The GDC designates evangelization as the church's essential mission in the world and situates catechesis as one function within it.
  9. The NDC, published after both RTV and the GDC, acknowledges the role of comprehensive youth ministry in adolescent catechesis, but it does not resolve the confusion.
  10. It may well be time for an alignment of vision for youth ministry.
  11. Refocusing Catholic Youth Ministry •Discipleship
  12. Discipleship We need to provide concrete ways by which the demands, excitement, and adventure of being a disciple of Jesus Christ can be personally experienced by adolescents
  13. Discipleship Young people need to have a true opportunity for exploring what discipleship ultimately involves.
  14. Discipleship The Christian faith is, above all, conversion to Jesus Christ
  15. Discipleship This conversion is the acceptance of a personal relationship with Christ, a sincere adherence to him, and a willingness to conform one’s life to His.
  16. Discipleship Be prepared to put your life on the line in order to enlighten the world with the truth of Christ; to respond with love to hatred and disregard for life; to proclaim the hope of the risen Christ in every corner of the earth.
  17. Discipleship • Are we truly taxing and testing teens’ resources? • Do they have true opportunities to explore what discipleship involves? • Are we (with the Spirit) seeking conversion, relationship with Christ, adherence, and conformity? • Is discipleship “life on the line” stuff?

  26. Relationships not Programs A Vision of Youth Ministry did not recommend program models or specific activities, recognizing that the day had passed when one program structure could respond to all the needs of youth.

  34. Relationships not Programs Effective ministry with adolescents was built on relationships. The central place of the Emmaus story in A Vision of Youth Ministry demonstrated the primacy of relationships and of discovering God within those relationships.

  48. It’s about the Church, of course Renewing the Vision is a call to make ministry with adolescents a concern for the entire church community, especially for leaders in parishes, schools, and dioceses.
  49. It’s about the Church, of course When we Refocus Our Vision, we need to call all leaders in parishes, schools, and dioceses to make sure the concerns of the entire church community are part of our ministry with adolescents.
