This is a sticky subject. Is email marketing dead? No... just different than it used
to be. Years ago, you could simply purchase a list, load it into an auto responder and
press send. Nowadays, that sort of activity could get your ISP blacklisted and you'd
quickly be out of business... due to the rules enforced by the good ole' boys of the FTC.
But, I think we've all matured enough to know that Spamming is not the proper
sort of business activity we want to utilize to be effective at internet marketing.
Now let's talk about the big issue with email marketing. I mean, there are plenty
of problems with this method of marketing such as, people not receiving your emails,
your emails landing in a spam folder and so on. Those aren't things that we can really
prevent but there are a few tips that could increase your chances of hitting your
prospects' in boxes.
One example of this is limiting the amount of capital text that you use in your
subject lines. Here's what I mean. Friends rarely send friends an email with big text in
the subject lines. An example of a bad subject line is this:
“THIS IS AWESOME”
Although this may seem effective, this is considered digital shouting. Also, the
spam filters see it as a marketing ploy to get people to open their emails. There is a very
good chance that this will not make it to your subscribers. On the other hand, this could:
“awesome... look at this (video)”
That sorta looks like something a friend would send to a friend. Also, the
inclusion of (video) peaks the interest of the reader and compels them to open the email.
Many more people will open your messages if they know what to expect when they
open your message.
Once they open the message, what could you do to compel them to click through
as well as, stay ahead of the spam filters? Well, most spam filters look at the length of
the messages, words and links. Look, emails are meant to be short. You can always type
your entire message on a blog or through a video on your blog, but your reader shouldn't
have to read a novel when they open your messages. Also, certain words like “free”
“buy”, “subscribe” and other salesy words could be interpreted as spam. In these cases, I
would write my message like this:
Hey there NAME
It's Bob. I just recorded this video for you
on my blog:
LINK
It's absolutely f*ree and there is nothing to
p*urchase. Just some good ole quality content
for you.
Ciao
Bob
As you can see, with the placement of symbols in my sales words, the spam filters
cannot read those words. If they can't read them, then they cannot penalize you for it.
Also, the message is very short and straight to the point. My reader knows what to
expect when they click through. There are also two other psychological elements in
place. That is the use of a blog and a video.
Both blogs and videos are considered more personal and a form of entertainment.
Your reader will not feel as if they are going to be pitched something. Speaking of that, I
even told them that there is nothing to purchase on the next page, just some quality
content for them.
Finally, I opened the letter and closed it as if I was typing the message to one of
my friends. You should always write your emails as if you are writing them to someone
you care about. Imagine if you wrote your grandmother a message saying:
Hey Grandma
I just came across this awesome business
opportunity and if you want to make thousands
a day... then boy is this the program for you!
Get yourself signed up today and we'll make a
ton of cash together!
Give me a break. Grandam would definitely not be pleased with you, and neither
will your subscribers!
Let's take a look at our entire email with the subject line included:
SUBJECT: awesome... look at this (video)
Hey there Bill
It's Bob. I just recorded this video for you
on my blog:
LINK
It's absolutely f*ree and there is nothing to
p*urchase. Just some good ole quality content
for you.
Ciao

That, my friend, is a quality email that is bound to have a great open and click
through rate. It's important that you continuously write new subject lines and change
your email format to suit. You definitely do not want to reveal your marketing strategy
to your subscribers, so change it up from time to time and be sure that you test which
subject lines are giving you the best open rates and which emails are getting you the best
click through rates. You can test this, with most auto responders by writing them in
HTML format... although text messages get through to readers better than HTML :)
Alright... so that's a little email strategy for you today and I do hope that this has been of
value to you. Be sure to communicate with your subscribers on a regular basis and
always send them quality content, more often then you send a sales message.
