10 Steps to Living A Life of Purpose and Meaning
by Leslie Fieger
I was asked in an email if I could peel away all the philosophical, metaphysical and motivational
language that I normally use to inspire people; and, in as few words as possible, explain what a person
needs to do in order to create a successful and fulfilling life.
This is about as succinct as I can get.
1. Define your ideals!
Make a list. What exactly are your ideals? Write them down clearly and succinctly. If you cannot do
this… forget success! There are five areas to your life: Material, Physical, Emotional, Mental and
Spiritual. You need to have defined ideals in all five areas in order to be a complete person.
2. Define your success!
Same thing. If you are not clear on what you desire, you will just end up with any old thing. What
exactly does success mean to you? Write it down. Refine it until it harmonizes with your heart, mind
and soul.
3. Set clear goals!
95% of people who have clear WRITTEN goals achieve them. 95% of people who do not, DO NOT! If
you can read this and not have clear written goals before the end of next week, you might as well
accept that you have chosen to live an accidental and meaningless life.
4. Be intentional!
Either you are thinking, feeling, believing, speaking and acting on purpose or you are an accident
waiting to happen. Ever said, “Oh, I didn’t do that on purpose.”? Uh, Huh. Ask yourself always, “What
is my intention in thinking this, in doing this?”
5. Develop the right habits!
Actions woven together (repeated) create habits. Habits woven together create character. Character
creates destiny. Everything you do weaves the fabric of your future. Habits are addictions. Get addicted
to what serves you. Drop the addictions to what does not.
6. Manage your time!
1,440. That’s it. Not one minute more do you have in each day. How many can you afford to squander?
You already have 1/3 of your life set aside to sleep. You will likely spend another 1/3 doing completely
non-productive but necessary things like shopping and taking out the trash. There is not a minute left
over to waste. Tick, tick. Tick, tick. Each heart beat slipping away, forever gone.
7. Get control of yourself!
This is not just having the self-discipline to act according to your defined ideals and goals. It is also
about not allowing other people to yank your chain. Do random phone calls or events interrupt your
pattern? Are other people’s plans interfering with yours? Look carefully at the lifestyles of highly
successful people. Is it easy to get their attention, to distract them from their own game plan? NO!
Makes you wonder if it is related to their success. Get focused and stay focused.
8. Communicate!
It is likely that your success will depend upon the cooperation or assistance of others. If you do not
clearly let people know what you are up to and what they can do to participate or help, then how can
you ever expect them to enroll in your plan of action. You must sell yourself and your ideals.
9. Review!
Set aside the time every day to review your ideals and your goals. Take stock of where you are. Note
your progress. Remind yourself of what your next step is. Ask yourself if you are on track?
10. Reflect!
Look at who you are becoming and how your life is unfolding. Remind yourself of your gifts and your
potential. Look at the big scheme of things. Reflect upon how the universe reflects back to you exactly
what you are. The universe is pretty awesome to behold. So are you.
You deserve to live a meaningful life. You deserve to make a difference in this world. You deserve to
have success. Stop selling yourself short and start living on purpose. Do it now.
Become what you need to be in order to enact what needs to be done in order to attain what you desire
to have and enjoy.
