1. The iPad 3: Due in 2012?
Why, Sell your old iPad if that’s the case!
The iPad 3
You will findfresh rumors going around the fact that the iPad 3, or the next generation iPad
tablet from Apple, will bepopping out between February and April 2012.
Most of these rumors are appearing as Apple’s supply chain and component suppliers are
gearing up for a forthcoming release.
Where’s the Evidence for the iPad 3?
The evidencecomes from sources within Apple’s supply chain, who say that OEM production of
the iPad 2 will continue to be high at 14-15 million units in the fourth quarter of 2011, but will
2. decrease to 4-5 million units in the first quarter of 2012, making way for the launch of the new
iPads.
Productionvolume level will be in the 9.5-9.8 million unit range throughout the first quarter of
2012 for the iPad 3, which will begin in January. Gross sales of iPad products totaled 25.06
million from the first three quarters of 2011 and are very likely to reach 40 million units for the
whole year.
Why Such Timing?
One might wonder why Apple would produce a device so shortly after the Christmas season,
but consider that Apple has anongoingrivalry with Samsung, so there’s questions that Apple
might launch the iPad 3 in February to be able to upstage Samsung’s (also rumored, but more
inclined) February launch of their next-generation Galaxy Tab.
Samsung’s device is rumored to have specs - including a retina display-like screen - that will be
put it into seriousrivalry with the iPad, at the leastin terms of hardware. The Samsung Galaxy
Tab 10.1 is already regarded as Apple’s nearest competitor, although it remains in a distant
second place.
There have also been recommendations that the launch might overlap with what would have
been Steve Jobs’ birthday on February 24th.
This conflict between the two ‘launch’ timeframes might be down to the difference between
‘unveiling’ and (widespread) ‘availability’, which might feasibly be a couple of weeks or perhaps
a month later.
Either way, a spring release would stay within Apple’s custom, as the first generation iPad was
launched in April and the iPad 2 was released in March.
What’s To Be Expected from the iPad 3?
3. As recently forecasted, the iPad 3 may very well be just a bit thicker and will provide a high-
resolution retina display screen dependent on new technology from Sharp. Actually, an
improved screen could be the essential feature with the iPad 3, quite possibly a 2048 x 1536
display.
There are also estimations that many of the most popular apps from Apple will have a higher
resolution as well.
That extra thickness should also include an A6 chip and - perhaps - a more substantial capacity
battery. There’s a possible chance of LTE support, and Nikkei Business recently “confirmed”
such LTE support.
If these upgrades do come with the iPad 3, it will put it on par with the iPhone and the iPhone
4S, both of which have the high-res screen.
In general, if you haven’t yet acquired yourself a tablet, it could be better to wait for more
several months. It appears as if the industry leaders will offer both an iPad 3 and a new Galaxy
tablet from which to choose.
