This four-semester program is designed to prepare students with the skills for administrative/executive work, including keyboarding, speedwriting, office management, communications, computers, and other office technology. Graduates are qualified for positions as administrative/executive assistants and office managers.
      Administrative Office Assistant
This three-semester Certificate program enables students to specialize in diverse areas to enhance their marketable skills. Skills the students receive in this program could include keyboarding, speedwriting, word processing, various software programs, records management, office technology, and communications.
    4. Nature of the Work
As technology continues to expand in offices, the role of the office professional has greatly evolved. Office automation and organizational restructuring have led administrative assistants and office professionals to assume a wider range of new responsibilities. Office professionals are responsible for a variety of administrative and clerical duties necessary to efficiently manage an organization. Currently they perform fewer clerical tasks but assume more office management duties, such as scheduling office operations and training other clerical workers. These clerical workers have assumed many of the tasks traditionally assigned to administrative assistants such as composing correspondence, managing databases, creating spreadsheets, and using word processing.
    5. Working Conditions
Office work can lend itself to alternative or flexible working arrangements. These schedules could include flextime, compressed work weeks, job sharing, or telecommuting; however, most office employees are full time and work 35 – 40 hours per week.
      Employment
Administrative office professionals and administrative assistants currently rank among the largest occupational area in the workforce. Employment opportunities in this area will continue to grow. Office automation and organizational restructuring will help make office workers more productive.
