    2. ACCOUNTING
Carl Sandburg College offers two distinct Accounting programs to meet the needs of students with diverse career goals ranging from developing specialized skills to providing a complete two-year educational program.
    3. Associate in Applied Science
This two-year program is designed to prepare the student who desires employment in the accounting department of many different types of organizations. All types of businesses require competent accounting personnel to keep accurate records and provide analysis of the effect of management decisions on day-to-day business activities. Completion of this degree will provide the skills necessary for positions as an accounting assistant.
      Accounting Certificate
This nine-month program is designed for the student who desires to work as an assistant to an accounting professional. Satisfactory completion of this certificate program will provide an appropriate background for an entry-level position in an accounting office.
    4. Nature of the Work
Accountants help to ensure businesses are run more efficiently, their records kept more accurately, and their taxes paid properly and on time. They perform these vital functions by offering an array of business and accounting services to their clients. These services include public, management, and government accounting as well as internal auditing. Accountants are broadening the services they offer to include budget analysis, financial and investment planning, information technology consulting, and limited legal services. Beyond the fundamental tasks of the occupation such as preparing, analyzing, and verifying financial documents in order to provide information to clients, many accountants now are required to possess a wide range of knowledge and skills.
    5. Working Conditions
Most accountants work in a typical office setting. Self-employed accountants may be able to complete a portion of their work at home. Most accountants work a 40-hour week, but many self-employedaccountants work longer hours, especially during tax preparation season.
      Employment
Accountants who have earned professional recognition through certification or licensure will have the best job prospects. Proficiency in accounting and auditing, computer software applications, or expertise in specialized areas may be helpful in gaining employment. In addition, employers increasingly are seeking applicants with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
