HIV/AIDS Statistics .42 million people are living with HIV/AIDS around the world: 28.1 million live in Africa; 2.4 million of them are children. AIDS is the leading cause of death in Africa and the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. AIDS orphaned over 12 million children in Africa alone as of 2000, 40 million orphans projected by 2010. Of the 6 million poor afflicted with HIV/AIDS, only 400,000 — less than 8% — are receiving anti-retroviral therapy. The Caribbean is the most affected region outside of Africa;more than five percent of Haitians are infected. 1,600 children are born with HIV each day; 1,500 of them insub-Saharan Africa; 1 child dies of AIDS every minute. More than two out of three newly infected 15- to 24-year-oldsare female. With 27 million people living with HIV/AIDS, only two percentin sub-Saharan Africa receive anti-retroviral treatment
