Discover how the Penn State College of Liberal Arts moved over 120 elearning websites running on separate installations into a single multisite system in less than 90 days. The new system retains the independent permissions and workflows each site needed to have while making them easier to manage and increasing performance.
Prior to the consolidation, the system was difficult to manage because everything had to be done 120 times! The new system runs under one Plone CMS multisite setup, using the open source tool Lineage. Now the major settings are centered under the main Plone site, which makes it much easier to roll out a new change. The system also allows new sites to easily be launched in a few clicks. New sites can inherit themes and page templates or have their own. Sites can even access common resources.
The previous setup was not very efficient since there were 120 catalogs to deal with, 120 sets of tools, etc. Now the site utilizes one catalog and one set of Plone tools to manage the infrastructure. This has increased performance by removing a lot of moving parts that weren't necessary.
We will go over the process of migrating, performance increases, the benefits of using Lineage for multisite in Plone, and briefly touch on how others are using Lineage and Plone for entire colleges.
