  • 2. During the Cold War the USSR and the US competed againin almost every way—even in science and inventions
  • 3. In 1957, the Soviets shocked the United States byputting the first satellite, called Sputnik, intospace.
  • 4. The United States wanted to beat the Soviets atwhat became known as the “Space Race”.
  • 5. In 1961 President Kennedy announced that the US wouldwork to have the first man on the moon and the it wouldoccur before the end of the 1960s.
  • 6. The Cuban Missile Crisis was when the Communists had missiles pointed at the US fromCuba.
  • 7. President Kennedy was assassinated in 1962.
  • 8. (The Space Center was named after him—The Kennedy Space Center in Florida)
  • 9. The first US man in space was Alan Shepard in1961.
  • 10. In 1962 John Glenn became the first man toorbit the earth.
  • 11. Finally, in July, 1969, Apollo 11 landed on themoon with 2 men. Neil Armstrong of Apollo11 was the first man to walk on the moon.
  • 12. Other moon missions followed and astronautseven drove a little car called the Lunar Rover onthe moon.
  • 13. After the moon missions stopped in the 1970s,work on the space shuttle began. Shuttles havebeen used to work in space ever since until this
  • 14. Because of WW2, the US became the greatestmanufacturer of goods in the entire world.
  • 15. The US supplied goods to many of our formerenemies, German and Japan during the 1950s.
  • 16. The Cold War stimulated the US to workhard at military defense and technology.
  • 17. The US quickly started making its ships nuclearpowered after WW2. The space race broughtabout many new technological improvements.
  • 18. Our God given freedoms, inherited from ourforefathers through the Constitution, allowed us togrow and enjoy the best standard of living in theentire world.
  • 19. In 1989 communism fell apart. The US becamethe world leader in every area:military, industry, food production, medicine, andtechnology.
  • 20. Democracy and Capitalism enables America tothrive.
