Opportunities to support Rural Livelihoods by adopting Renewable Energy options to meet communities energy requirements Ashok Kumar Gupta 23 rd ,June, 2010
ANNUAL PER CAPITA CONSUMPTION STATUS OF ENERGY
Gujarat- 1283.77 Kw/hr
Madhya Pradesh- 580.34 Kw/hr
Bihar- 85.86 Kw/hr
Energy poverty: 400million rural Indians (56% of population).
Cooking energy: 75% of rural households depend on firewood for cooking, 10% on dungcake and about 5% on LPG.
Lighting energy: 50% of rural households depend on kerosene and another 48% on electricity generated.
Energy availability in rural areas Resources Gujarat Bihar MP Grid based electricity 20+ hrs per day 3 hrs/ day 6hrs/day Generator based nil 3 hrs Rs2-3/day nil Irrigation in tribal area 35% electricity 100% diesel 90% diesel Irrigation in non tribal area 70% electricity Nil AKRSP not working Per village diesel cost 2.4 lakhs for 45 farmers 80 engines- Rs 8 lakh Cooking Fuel wood, crop residue, kerosene Cow dung cake, crop residue Fuel wood, crop residue, dung cake
Technological solutions AKRSP evolved for Rural Area BIOGAS SOLAR COOKER WIND MILL
TECHNOLOGICAL Solutions…..2 Solar lighting in Bihar programme area
Deenbandhu Model of Biogas Plant used by 10,457 women for cooking with 75% functionality rate
Biogas Linkage with sanitation Now, 1520 plants in tribal area are linked to toilets
Models adopted repairs & maintenance of Biogas plants Effective entrepreneur based maintenance of old biogas plants.
Netrang promoted group of trained women for repairs of plants and:
Motivating women to adopt technology
Trained as mason for construction of Bio gas plant
Post construction care & repairs & management
No eye burning due to smoke
Reduced back pain due to less time required for cooking.
One hour less time spent in cooking.
Food doesn’t have smell of smoke.
Men share some responsibility
On hard labour & One hour time for cleaning:
Utensils less blacken due to smoke of inferior fuel usage.
Her hands doesn’t get black while washing utensils.
No black roof top.
On time (1/2 day) for fuel collection:
Save time in preparing cow dung cake by mixing straw.
Save time & space for them to drying in sunlight.
Save time & space for storage. Time savings for women
Improvement in health
Impact – Village level
One Bio Gas plant annually save either of three:
48.2qtl fuel wood
171.0 qtl cow dung
574 ltr Kerosene oil.
1 cubic meter of biogas (One family) which will produce gas of equivalent to 5 KG of wood.
Emission reduction by using biogas one cubic meter biogas will reduce 9 Kg of CO2 (Net) per day.
AKRSP has constructed so far 10457 no. household level plants
Achievements Till Date 2043 women use solar cookers for cooking the food
Wind energy utilization for agri base livelihood enhancement
Subsidized wind mill costs Rs. 1.05 lakh which have 60% govt. subsidy.
53 Farmers in adjoining area of Gir PA are using windmills for lifting ground water.
No electricity allowed in protected area so 53 rainfed farmers converted to irrigated farmers
Ensure water use efficiency in 85 ha. area
Innovative Cost Effective Wind Mill
Developed from AKRSP experience in 2008.
Manufacturing cost Rs. 45000/-
Trained local fabricator to manufacture.
12 wind mill install since last year
Financial Support available
Biogas govt subsidy Rs. 8000 per plant s available.
In Gujarat GEDA provide 60% subsidy (cost Rs1.05 lakh)
Solar lighting in collaboration with TERI 50% of Rs 75000/ cost (LABL)
Solar energy appropriatenss on worst case scenerion than optimum level caliberations.
Affordability by increasing diverse product on solar energy solutions.
Solar+ Wind energy hybrid system for lighting purpose.
Exploring feasibility of LED based illumination.
Economic viable Energy solutions for computer training centers.
Challenges & Opportunities
Attracting professionals of renewable energy to develop client oriented products.
Renewable energy developers struggling to increase reliabilty of sources.
Storage is still expensive.
Evolve market for quality products & effiecient maintenece support.
Renewable energy is always looked as part time solutions while in state like Bihar & MP grid based solutions will take next 10yrs.
Rural jobs and agricultural value added limited by lack of energy.
Challenges & Opportunities
Developing business model for Household level home lighting options & its scaling up.
Developing feasible business model for wind mill and scaling it up in energy scarce area.
AKRSP developed Wind mills for water lifting & electricity generation can be scaled up in Bihar & MP.
In North Bihar water lifting is due to lack of energy, hence following options can be piloted:
