Girls and Young Women in Asia-Pacific <ul><li>Comprise the majority of population in the Asia-Pacific Region ( 60% of 850 million aged 10 to 24) </li></ul><ul><li>“ Missing” victims of varied forms of violence </li></ul><ul><li>Discrimination is widespread </li></ul><ul><li>Lack access to information, education and services, including reproductive health </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of meaningful participation in the community at various levels of the decision making process.  </li></ul>The Asia-Pacific Region and the Contribution of the New Development Executive to WAGGG&apos;s Mission

MDGs Progress Related to Women and Young Girls Women in Asia-Pacific <ul><li>Progress towards equal enrollment in primary school, but gender inequality in literacy still an issue in the poorest countries </li></ul><ul><li>Progress towards women’s equal representation in National Governments have generally been too slow </li></ul><ul><li>Despite some progress, still 518,000 children in South-East Asia and more than 650,000 children in East Asia die annually before their fifth birthday </li></ul><ul><li>250,000 mothers in the Asia-Pacific region die every year during pregnancy and child birth </li></ul><ul><li>Negative impact of global economic trends and policies in the Asia Pacific region on young women and girls as reflected in the increase in child prostitution and trafficking, child labour, child homelessness and culturally sanctioned child marriages and sexual exploitation </li></ul>The Asia-Pacific Region and the Contribution of the New Development Executive to WAGGG&apos;s Mission
