  2. 2. Cairn India – CSR InitiativesRespect | Relationships | Responsibility Our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programmes strike a balance between addressing the unique needs of various communities while partnering the state and central agencies to help strive for the betterment of the social indicators of the regions. This journey from micro to macro makes the CSR initiatives more effective and sustainable. For every life touched there is a larger story of the community and the village.

  5. 5. Cairn India – CSR InitiativesRespect | Relationships | ResponsibilityBarmer, a frontier district of the Thar Desert, owing to theextremities of weather, was still largely untouched by development. The total population of the district is about 2 million with a literacyrate of 59%. In the midst of this hostile terrain, Barmer was knownfor the entrepreneurial spirit of its people to create art infused withvibrancy and joy. But, it was the discovery of one of the largestonshore hydrocarbon reserves in the country that completelychanged the fate of this otherwise non-descript place. Rajasthan has one of the highest livestock populations in the country. Despite this, the milk production in Rajasthan is very low due to extreme climatic conditions, poor technology and nonexistent market linkages.

  7. 7. Cairn India – CSR InitiativesRespect | Relationships | ResponsibilityDairy Development Livestock breeding has been the traditional subsistence strategy in Western Rajasthan for the marginalised sections of the society in rural areas with limited or no land resources. Majority of the milk produced was retained by the communities for their own use. Most of the collection was localised and largely managed by private vendors. Under the Cairn-IFC linkage programme, a Dairy initiative was launched, aimed at improving the economic condition of the rural poor. By design, the programme targeted women, especially from the marginalised communities, who otherwise had no opportunities for economic emancipation. This project has not only enabled them to contribute to the family income but has also empowered them as organised Self Help Groups (SHGs) exploring other livelihood options. Benefits of this programme include the introduction of technology for transparency, accountability, and fair price realisation. Due to the right fat measurement, the price realisation has gone up by 25%. Linkage with Saras (state dairy federation) has ensured an assured buyer for the collected milk, and also made provision for quality fodder and nutrients for the livestock. These SHGs now contribute about 25% of total milk collected by Saras Dairy at Barmer.
  8. 8. Cairn India – CSR Initiatives Respect | Relationships | ResponsibilityThe absence of colour in the desert terrain is made up by the inclusion of it in artefacts and handicrafts.
