Having earned thedistinction of being the most industrialised state in India, Gujarat also has a rich tradition ofhistory, culture and crafts. Even with extensive modernisation, Gujarat and its people have beenable to preserve the rich culture and tradition of the ancient past. The diverse ethnicgroups constituting thepopulation of Gujaratcomprise the culturaldiversity of the state. The varied culture ofGujarat is reflected inthe unique characteristictraits of the people ofdifferent parts of thestate. Child shows the man as morning shows the day! Children are the key to influencing mindsets and bringing about behavioural changes. Across the pipeline route, areas are plagued by low levels of immunization coverage of only 34%. Awareness about hygiene and sanitation is as low as 21% in certain areas.

Cairn India – CSR InitiativesRespect | Relationships | ResponsibilityHealth and Sanitation The health and sanitation programmes along the pipeline route in Gujarat have been designed innovatively. The programmes target children through application and introduction of issues and concepts through theatre, painting and exhibitions travelling to schools across villages. As a part of the endeavour, locations are also chosen in a school or a village and given a makeover by the children through cleaning and wall painting. The approach is multi pronged as it also targets the mothers through the child and maternal health programme, hygiene concepts through water and sanitationinitiatives, and health camps which could be attended by villagers.Cairn India in partnership with local NGOs is involved in all aspects of the initiatives – fromcommunity awareness programmes to capacity building trainings for the service providers toconceptualising and developing interesting communication material and building channels ofinformation dissemination on the issues.
