Transcript of "The Giant Banana Slug"

  1. 1. THE GIANT BANANA SLUG
  2. 2. The giant Banana Slug, the second largest inthe world (after the European Limax), has morethan just its size and resemblance to a certainyellow fruit. This is one of the unsungchampions of the forest, for the banana slugonly eats dead organic material which they thenturn in to soil.
  3. 3. As a member of the mollusc phylum they havesoft bodies and no obvious shell. A single foottransports the slug, found on the westernseaboard of the North America, from California allthe way up to Alaska, via a system of rhythmicwaves. To ensure this foot does not get damagedit also secretes a layer of mucus and it is on thislayer the slug travels rather than the ground itself.
  4. 4. The hump on the back of a banana slug (Ariolimaxcolumbianus) is called the mantle. Underneath it are somerather important organs, the genitals and the anus. It is themantle which protects them. In some species, including thebanana slug, this is where the mollusk will have a very smalland flat shell.
  5. 5. The mucus has much more than just a singlerole, and it is to enable the slug to breathe. Theyare pulmonates and this means that they onlyhave a tiny pair of internal lungs. These areexposed to the outside via a pneumostone. Theycollects moisture out of the air and extractsoxygen and is used when the slug is doingsomething particularly laborious and an extrasupply is needed. Otherwise, the slime keeps theskin wet so oxygen can be breathed through it.
  6. 6. The two sets of feelers on the slug’s head help out in a sensorial manner. The top ones are used to detect light and the lower onesprovide its sense of smell. The slug can retract these feelers, but in case they are destroyed they can be replaced – they will simplygrow back.
  7. 7. Can grow up to 25cm in length and although they are often yellow the color depends very much on their recent diet, the amount ofmoisture in their locale and the light. They can look like an overripe banana, with black mottling appearing on their skin and they canalso come in shades of green and white. Their various colors also help as a form of camouflage.
  8. 8. When they are spotted by predators, the Banana Slug has another use for its mucus. The mucus contains an anesthetic whichcan make the predator’s mouth tissue numb, making chewing all but impossible. Not only that but the mucus will becomestickier, and impossible to chew.
  9. 9. The slug is a hermaphrodite which means that they contain female and male organs. The mucus is used in the mating process as well –they leave another chemical in their slime which other slugs will find irresistible. When they meet for mating purposes, banana slugsform a heart shape and exchange sperm. After they have laid their 70 or so eggs they will leave them to their own devices, don’t doparenting.
  10. 10. They can live to be a few years old and so will see a number of winters and summers. When the temperature gets to just below zerothey will hibernate. They will also estivate during hot spells – burrowing into leaves or soils and insulating themselves from the heat inthe cool, surrounded by a bubbly layer of mucus.
  11. 11. The Banana Slug contribute to its ownecosystem in ways which belie thereputation of its phylum and should betreasured as such.
  12. 12. “Our task must be to free ourselves... by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and its beauty.”
