    • 1 OVERVIEW OF EMTP STUDIES AND MODEL DEVELOPMENT AT RTE Alexandre PARISOT EMTP-RV User Group Meeting Dubrovnik, Croatia, April 30th 2009
    • 2 RTE : Réseau de Transport d’Electricité  RTE is the French Transmission System Operator (U > 50 kV) TRANSMISSION LINES (km) 400 kV 21 093 225 kV 26 322 150, 90, 63 et 45 kV 52 759 TRANSFORMERS (PRIMARY) 400 kV 276 220 kV 887 150 kV 35 400 kV 90 or 63 kV 52 network
    • 3 CONTEXT AND EVOLUTION  CHALLENGES FOR RTE :  Changes on the generation side : gas, renewables + nuclear plants (EPR)  Ageing of the existing network  Limited public acceptance for new overhead lines  Projects for new EHV links with the surrounding European TSOs  AS A RESULT : NEED TO OPTIMIZE THE NETWORK PERFORMANCE AND TO ASSESS NEW TECHNOLOGIES/PRACTICES
    • 4 EMTP-RV STUDIES  Insertion of long shunt-compensated EHV cables  Compensation scheme  Transient and resonant overvoltages  Constraints on circuit breakers  Protection and control  Uprating transmission lines and substations to higher voltages  Impact on insulation coordination  Installation of series capacitors  Subsynchronous oscillations (SSR)  TRV voltages on the circuit breakers  Ferroresonance  Protection and control  Refurbishment of IFA 2000 HVDC link between France and the UK  Validation of SSR mitigation techniques  Validation of the insulation coordination studies  Behaviour with AC short circuit  Validation of the protection and control system
    • 5 EMTP-RV STUDIES  Study for a future HDVC link with Spain  Behaviour under short-circuit conditions  Impact on existing protection and control scheme  Specification of filter components  Lightning performance of overhead lines  Use of line surge arresters and static  Behaviour and impact of onshore and offshore wind farms  Behaviour with AC short-circuit  Impact on the protection and control systems  … VOLUME AND RELEVANCE OF THESE STUDIES  EMTP - RV MODELING EXPERTISE NEEDED AMONG ENGINEERING & DESIGN TEAMS
    • 6 EMTP-RV TOOLBOXES EMTP-RV + EMTP-RV TOOLBOXES WILL REPLACE IN-HOUSE SOFTWARE  CRINOLINE  EGERIE  Electromagnetic compatibility  Electrical calculations for  Developed by group of companies protection studies including EDF, RTE, HQ, CEATI  To be replaced by EMTP toolbox  LIPS  CAPELINE  Flashover rates on overhead lines  Earthing grid analysis  Developed by HQ and EDF  At technical specification stage  TRV Studies  ANALIG  Automated Transient Recovery  Overhead line calculations Voltage calculations on CBs (electrical parameters, losses,  Developed by EDF for RTE field calculations)  Electrical calculations with EMTP
    • 7 EMTP USER GROUP AT RTE Substations 2 System HT equipment 5 6 J-P. TAISNE S. HENRY operator R&D Substation design 1 Réseau de compétences Secretary : « études et simulations Steering commitee A. PARISOT électrotechniques » P. MONTPELLIER P. REBUT 4 4 P & C schemes 2 Overhead lines and equipment Underground cables 3 5 Protection and control OHL & Cables 17 EMTP USERS - National expertise center CREATED IN 2008
    • 8 KEY OBJECTIVE FOR 2009 DEVELOP EMTP-RV MODELS FOR EXISTING AND FUTURE COMPONENTS IN THE FRENCH NETWORK  Develop HVDC models : LCC (Thyristor-based) and VSC (IGBT)  Generic models for early system studies  Detailed models for each HVDC system  Assess the validity range of OHL, cable and transformer models  Depending on the study type : steady-state, transient overvoltages…  Develop EMTP models for wind generators (generic and detailed)  Input data in the (existing) models for RTE’s needs  How to parametrize the models from available data ?  Build and validate librairies for existing equipment in the RTE network  Surge arresters, transformers, CTs and VTs, CB, etc…
    • 9 CONCLUSION AND STUDY EXAMPLES STRONG EMTP-RV ACTIVITY AT RTE, TO MEET NEW CHALLENGES NEEDS IN TERMS OF MODEL DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENTS (HVDC, WIND GENERATORS, CABLES…) Today’s talks from RTE will further illustrate some of the activities of our EMTP-RV user group :  Definition of a protection system for active substations in a radial network  Jonathan DUFOUR  Calculation of the flashover rate due to lighting with the EMTP-RV toolbox LIPS  Arnaud GUERRIER  Compensation and transient studies on a long EHV overhead line  Damien LEBRANCHU
