This is a basic introduction to the Florida State College at Jacksonville Open Campus/Deerwood Center Library Learning Commons, how to access and use the catalog, tutoring services available, and handy information. A very basic introduction to the library and its services for the entering college student.

  • A database article is the preferred tool for doing academic research. With a peer reviewed article (from a Scholarly Journal) being the most respected.
  • Best to use the subject database
  • Using the DATABASE by SUBJECT page, click on the “+” sign next to the GENERAL tab. This expands the list of databases that are considered good for a general search. For this example we will use Academic Search Complete which is an EBSCO database.
  • A scholarly journal is a peer reviewed publication written by a professionals in the field. They are usually written with other professionals in the field in mind and more detailed and scientific in nature.
  • This particular article is available in HTML format which mean that the article will have more Internet functionality than a PDF format.
  • The article can now be read, listened to, downloaded, emailed, shared and cited. One note about Citations.
  • Most databases will offer a citation format. Use these only as a guide, not as an authority. Use only the citation handbook the authority. Database companies offer this as a service but are not citation companies. As such, they are not authorities on citation formats.
  • Online using Connections - Add value online using debit/credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card).On Campus - Add value at any campus business office during office hours on any Florida State College at Jacksonville campus using cash only. Cashiers are available in business offices on each campus and center.
  • You must be a currently enrolled student at FSCJ to have access to materials for check-out
  • The Library learning commons is also home to Math Science Writing, English and Foreign Language tutoring. If you need help, feel free to stop in to the LLC. No appointment is necessary!
  • Bob is the Computer Academic Tutor for the Open Campus/Deerwood Center Library Learning Commons. If one of the student tutors can’t answer your technology question, Bob will do his best to help you.
  • The writing lab now has Reading and writing tutors. They will not help you to write your paper but will review it for errors.

  • Introduction During this presentation the student will learn about • Basic library services to which students are entitled at FSCJ’s seven campus locations, • What is needed to access those services, • Academic Tutoring support available on-campus and on-line, • How to contact a librarian for help in doing research, plus • Applications for smart devices that are helpful to the new college student Understanding what’s available to support you while you are a college student, and taking advantage of those services = SUCCESS!

When you log-in through connections, and go the Library catalog, you will be automatically logged in to the On-line library databases.

  • What is a database? • A database is a collection of information that is organized so that its content can easily be accessed, managed, and updated. • There are many Database Companies, for example ProQuest, Gale, NewsBank, EBSCO and many more. • These companies do the evaluative process on the many magazines, journals, and news organizations that provide information for academic research, so you, the student, don’t have to check credentials, motivation, sources, etc. on every article you use in doing research.
  • FSCJ subscribes to over 200 Databases The Database list can be accessed alphabetically, or by subject. Librarians suggest the “Database by Subject” list, unless you have a particular database in mind. subject Alphabetical
  • A Basic Search Example in Academic Search Complete • Click the “+” by “GENERAL” to expand the list, then • Click on “Academic Search Complete” to open that database

  • • The writing lab tutors will review any typed written, double-spaced, formatted paper for errors. • Allow at least one hour for review. • The writing lab tutors are available for any paper or project written in the English language. • Any class project. • Not just for English class, but for ANY CLASS • Tutoring is also available PLAN AHEAD!
