    Block3 FossilRecord - Presentation Transcript

    1. Fossil Record Melinda M., Devin S., Amber M.
    2.
    3. Fossil Record-
      • history of life as documented by fossils
      • Investigators can tell the age of the fossils and compare to others.
      Age of Fossils
    4. Index Fossil
      • A plant or animal that has the characteristics or qualities of being in a certain time period or era.
    5.
    6.
    7. Extinction
      • The fossil record shows that extinctions have been frequent in the history of life.
    8. Paleontology
      • Paleontology is the branch of science devoted to the understanding of past life as revealed by the fossil record.
    9. Transitional Fossils
      • Shows how species change over time or how species change from the modern animal.
      • Charles Lyell
      • Fossil Record shows changes in life through almost any sequence of sedimentary rock layers.
Starfish to Fish Fish to Frog Frog to Lizard Lizard to Rabbit Dinosaur to Ostrich
      • Buried plants and animal remains become fossils within sedimentary layers.
    10. Biostratigraphy
      • Study of the sequence of the fossils in rocks.
    11. Evidence
      • Finding fossils with changes from the oldest (deepest) to the newest sedimentary layers (shallowest), shows evolution.
      • Aerosteon Riocoloradensis
