  • 2. Intellectual Question :- <ul><li>Q : Where does dowry stand in our society ? </li></ul>
  • 3. HYPOTHESIS :- <ul><li>“ Dowry is a social evil and has become a status symbol “ </li></ul>
  • 4. DOWRY <ul><li>Dowry is defined as the ‘money, goods or estate that a woman brings to her husband at marriage’. It is also known as the ‘property, which a woman brings to her husband at marriage’ </li></ul>
  • 5. Contd ……… <ul><li>Forms of dowry were common in Europe until the 19th century and are still important in the Islamic world. There is an act against dowry in India and it is still prevailing in most of the Muslim world. </li></ul>
  • 6. Islamic Perspective of Dowry <ul><li>There are no authentic hadith or reports explicitly stating a minimum or maximum amount of dowry.  All hadith which explicitly state such things are weak narrations.   </li></ul><ul><li>The famous and widely heard story about Umar ibn Al-Khattab attempting to prohibit large dowries Umar advised people not to be excessive in dowries </li></ul>
  • 7. Dowry as Social Evil !!! <ul><li>Demanding and giving dowry is a widespread evil among Muslims . It is not restricted to the demand of and giving to the groom’s side. It is equally an offence when the bride’s side demands or agrees to receive dowry. </li></ul>
  • 8. Contd……. <ul><li>Upper class of our society gives dowry according to their own status . They provide the things from basic needs to the things which comes in luxuries , including luxury cars, luxury bungalows . They show their wealth and status by giving more and more dowry . </li></ul>
  • 9. Contd ……… <ul><li>In our society it is hard for a poor man to meet the requirement (demand) of grooms side . The soaring prices of home appliances, jewellery and house hold items etc has made it difficult for a poor man to live in this cruel society. </li></ul><ul><li>Poor people are being grinded in the brutal competition of dowry . </li></ul>
  • 10. APPEALING FACTS :- <ul><li>Dowry kills 7 women everyday (Official Survey) </li></ul><ul><li>21 women die everyday because of dowry </li></ul><ul><li>( un official survey) . </li></ul><ul><li>Almost 500 suicide deaths are reported every year as a consequence of dowry (National Bureau of Investigation). </li></ul><ul><li>Domestic violence is on the rise and many of these are caused by inadequate dowry. </li></ul>
  • 11. Conclusion :- <ul><li>It is certainly a social evil and should be eliminated from our society . </li></ul>
